We were lucky to catch up with Yuchan Yang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Yuchan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Overall, I like discovering unknown knowledge based on what I have learned from school courses and exploring things that interest me in my leisure time. On top of that, I started to build up my foundation of aesthetics and helped myself gain more diverse knowledge. A unique, personal taste in aesthetics is one of my most significant skills; it allows one to enhance learned knowledge and techniques, thus amplifying the synergy in creating works. However, it requires a balance between learning and practicing. Sometimes I feel lost after consuming too much information without practicing it in my projects. I always pause for a moment, look back at what I have learned so far, and then restart the process of learning and self-improvement.

Yuchan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Yuchan Yang. I am an international student from Liaoyang, China, currently studying Illustration and Motion Media Design at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). As an aspiring multimedia visual artist, I am driven by a passion for creativity and storytelling. In my projects, I like to create impactful visual narratives and animate them using cinematic methodologies. Most of my works are intended to be part of my Narrative World Design, which has now become one of the major missions to achieve on my creative journey.
Fifteen years ago, I began to systematically learn Traditional Art and Design principles. At that time, all of my expectations were to enroll in an Art School and graduate as a designer or teacher somehow. However, my parents encouraged me to go overseas to pursue a higher level of study. As a result, three years ago, I enrolled at SCAD as an MFA Illustration student. I also pursued a second major in Motion Media Design to explore my potential to create motion graphics with illustrative approach. Although I am still on the track of learning and practicing, I have already received several awards for my projects, as meaningful recognition of my creativity and efforts.
I have always wanted to be unique at some point. This idea has been in my mind since I first started learning art and design. My experiences of being exposed to different cultures have provided me with diverse perspectives, helping me to build an entire artistic universe in my inner world. With these in mind, I have incorporated these thoughts into my works, using symbols and metaphors to visually convey my concepts and stories to the audience. Additionally, my solid foundation in art mastery and software techniques has brought my visions to life and cooperated to create various forms of expression.
Beyond my academic and personal achievements, I have also gained valuable experience through internships and freelance projects. These opportunities have allowed me to collaborate with clients from various industries, honing my ability to understand and meet their unique design preferences. From conceptualization to execution, I approach each project with enthusiasm and dedication, ensuring the highest quality results.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue my journey as a visual artist and to make a meaningful impact to the industry. With my passion for creativity and storytelling, I am confident in my ability to thrive in any design environment. I am eager to explore new opportunities and collaborate with like-minded individuals who share my passion for creation.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
My creativity is the nutrition for my heart, the spice that makes my life more flavorful. Being an artist has helped me to find inner peace and build a mental sanctuary out of nowhere. Looking back at the illustration and animation pieces I have created throughout the years, they are tangible items born from nothing, and they are solid proof of self-accomplishment, leaving a mark on the material world. Beyond that, through the process of conveying my thoughts to the audience, it connects me with similar people who resonate with my works, thus making me socially linked with like-minded souls.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For now and in the future, I will try my best to explore various mediums in my Narrative World Design projects. This includes not only illustrations and motion graphics but also experimental approaches like video games, live-action movies, immersive experiences, and more. Engaging with different mediums allows me to connect with a diverse range of professionals in creative industries. I firmly believe that by expanding my creative horizons, I will discover new ways to showcase my work to the world.
