We were lucky to catch up with Yuan Tian recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yuan, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Women and women artists have always had to work harder and sacrifice more than men to achieve success. They are often faced with the dilemma of choosing between family and career. This is the biggest feeling I had after watching the British film Red Shoes. I wondered why women have to face such a choice and why women must sacrifice more than men to achieve success. So I had the idea to create a project to show the public the difficulties of women and women artists. In this project, I researched the structure of the tutu and found that the tutu consists of two main parts, the soft and elegant skirt, and the inner shaping boning, but the hard boning for shaping is hidden in the fabric, just like women need to hide their ambition and career. So I had the boning as the main element to develop the silhouette. and exposing it to the outside. To better express my project I also created and designed an installation. In this installation, ballerinas will dance in the clothes that I designed. But in the installation, I designed a lot of obstacles and barriers in which the performers will dance. It is as if a female artist needs to overcome many obstacles to achieve success.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Tian Yuan, and I come from a small seaside town in northern China. When I was young, I didn’t have any idea of becoming a designer. It wasn’t until I occasionally saw a book about Alexander Mcqueen when I was in high school that I got the idea of becoming a fashion designer. To achieve this goal, I started studying art and preparing for the art entrance exam. In college, I chose to major in fashion design. Then I came to the United States to study abroad to learn the design method better. During my study abroad I found my design direction and style. I specialize in and am passionate about deconstructionism and I like to redefine the segmented human body with garment structures. In my opinion, clothing is the second skin of a person, not only redefining the external form of a person but also giving other possibilities to the shape of the human body.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In my creative work, my creative goal is to be able to make my own voice heard through my own work. I want to be able to express my views on the world through my works, and I want to convey them for more people to see and hear.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think first of all, it should be a relatively free environment soil, should be able to provide creators with a free creative environment. I think the most important element of a creative environment is freedom, if there is no relatively free creative environment but many restrictions, it will certainly hinder the creative thinking of creators. Secondly, I think we should encourage creators’ freedom of creation and reward them for their excellent work. For example, we can hold a significant event with prizes to promote excellent designers to participate. Such significant events can not only discover more outstanding talents but also encourage the creation of designers. In addition, a platform for creators to communicate and cooperate is also essential. The exchange between creators helps designers grow and improve.
