We recently connected with Yu(Amber) Qiu and have shared our conversation below.
Yu(Amber), thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is my “Infinite Reflections” collection, which delves into the profound concept of the multiverse theory, drawing inspiration from the intricate interplay between personal choices and reality. This project stands out because it marries my passion for fashion with my fascination for architecture, while also challenging traditional fashion norms.
The journey began with my love for the organized chaos of a denim washing plant in Guangzhou, where my parents have been producing denim for years. The sight of thousands of pairs of jeans hanging to dry, like bats resting on the roof, evoked a sense of whimsy and uniformity that I wanted to capture in my designs. Each pair of jeans, though almost identical, had tiny differences that made them unique—a concept I wanted to translate into fashion.
Central to the collection is the utilization of laser cutting techniques, which play a pivotal role in transforming intricate graphics into clothing patterns. This methodical approach underscores the significance of the creative process itself, highlighting that the journey of bringing designs to life holds true value, beyond the mere final outcome.
I decided to incorporate these techniques into my designs, drawing inspiration from three specific buildings: the interior of the Guggenheim Museum, the exterior of the apartment building Via 57 West in Hell’s Kitchen, and the denim washing plant in Guangzhou. These structures represent a blend of fluidity, modernity, and industrial aesthetics, which I aimed to reflect in my collection.
One of the standout pieces from this collection is a vest made of a thick, suede-like cotton fabric. I divided the vest into 48 squares, each featuring a pattern inspired by the washing plant, with rotations and reflections creating a harmonious design. Achieving the right balance was challenging, as laser cutting on fabrics can easily lead to burning or tearing. After multiple trials, I perfected a technique that made the patterns visible and gave the fabric an embroidered feel.
Rather than focusing solely on aesthetic appeal, each piece in the collection serves as a deeply personal reflection of my life journey. Elements of my experiences are meticulously woven into the fabric of the designs, offering a glimpse into my innermost thoughts and emotions. The creative process becomes a sanctuary, where these reflections are transformed into tangible expressions, making the designs more than just artistic manifestations but windows into the essence of navigating through life’s complexities.
This project is meaningful to me because it encapsulates my growth as a designer. It taught me to balance creativity with technical precision, to draw inspiration from my surroundings, and to push the boundaries of traditional fashion. It also allowed me to create designs that invite people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate their uniqueness, which is the core of my work as a gender-neutral fashion designer.

Yu(Amber), before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Yu (Amber) Qiu, and I am a fashion designer specializing in gender-neutral apparel and accessories. My work focuses on creating gender-inclusive designs that defy traditional norms. I employ laser cutting technologies and introduce novel materials that transcend standard fashion conventions. My goal is to invite people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate their distinctiveness through fashion—a celebration of uniqueness and inclusivity. My designs invite you to embrace your individuality and express it through fashion. Whether you’re looking for something that defies traditional norms or simply seeking a piece that resonates with your personal journey, my collections offer something special and meaningful.
One of the key elements that set my work apart is the meticulous use of laser cutting techniques. In my “Infinite Reflections” collection, for example, laser cutting plays a pivotal role in transforming intricate graphics into clothing patterns. This methodical approach underscores the significance of the creative process itself, highlighting that the journey of bringing designs to life holds true value beyond the mere final outcome.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The core mission driving my creative journey is to challenge and redefine traditional fashion norms by creating gender-neutral apparel and accessories that celebrate individuality and inclusivity. I believe that fashion should be a reflection of one’s unique identity, free from the constraints of conventional gender roles.
One of the key goals in my work is to provide clothing that resonates with people from diverse backgrounds, allowing them to express their true selves through fashion. This mission is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing designs but also about fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. I aim to create pieces that invite people to embrace their uniqueness and feel confident in their skin.
Innovation plays a crucial role in my creative journey. By employing cutting-edge techniques like laser cutting and introducing novel materials, I strive to push the boundaries of what fashion can be. These innovations are not just about aesthetics but also about enhancing the functionality and wearability of the designs, ensuring that they are practical and accessible for everyone.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to bring unique visions to life and see how they resonate with and impact others. Here’s an elaboration on this thought:
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to transform abstract ideas into tangible expressions that can inspire and connect with people on a deep level. There’s a profound sense of fulfillment in taking a concept, nurturing it through the creative process, and ultimately seeing it come to life in a way that evokes emotions, tells a story, and sparks conversations.
One of the greatest joys for me is witnessing how my designs resonate with people from diverse backgrounds. When someone connects with a piece I’ve created—whether it’s because it makes them feel confident, seen, or simply brings them joy—it reaffirms the purpose behind my work. Fashion, to me, is more than just clothing; it’s a powerful form of self-expression and a medium through which people can communicate their identities and experiences.
Another rewarding aspect is the continual journey of learning and innovation. As an artist, I’m always exploring new techniques, materials, and inspirations. This constant evolution keeps the creative process exciting and dynamic. It’s incredibly gratifying to push the boundaries of what’s possible in fashion and to see how these innovations can create new avenues for expression and inclusivity.
Additionally, the collaborative nature of the fashion industry is something I find immensely rewarding. Working with other creatives, whether they are fellow designers, photographers, or models, brings a diversity of perspectives and skills to the table. These collaborations often lead to unexpected and beautiful outcomes that I couldn’t achieve on my own.
Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect is knowing that my work contributes to a larger conversation about identity, inclusivity, and self-expression. Fashion has the power to challenge norms and inspire change, and being a part of that movement is deeply fulfilling. It’s an honor to create pieces that not only look good but also hold meaning and significance for those who wear them.
