We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Youyin Zhang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Youyin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
As a filmmaker, I believe that demanding perfection is not the key to taking the first step. Expecting a masterpiece from the start can limit creative freedom. Instead, I evaluate the feasibility of an idea and take immediate action once it’s viable. Maintaining a stable mindset during execution is crucial, as challenges can stimulate new inspiration.
As a film editor, having time allows for trial and error. Patience and continuous experimentation often lead to unexpected surprises. In tight deadlines, experience helps me quickly generate viable solutions based on past trial and error.
Striking a balance between pushing boundaries and meeting deadlines is challenging. Timely delivery is essential, but creativity should not be sacrificed. By leveraging the experience and an open-minded approach, innovative solutions can be found. Pressure can even ignite unexpected creativity.
To aspiring filmmakers, I advise embracing imperfections and overcoming the fear of failure. Start with manageable ideas, take action, and learn from mistakes. The first step is the beginning of a journey to refine your craft.
In conclusion, the key to taking the first step in filmmaking is not demanding perfection. Embrace imperfections, assess feasibility, and take action. Maintain a stable mindset and approach challenges with openness. Time allows for trial and error, while experience aids in quick decision-making. Embracing imperfections leads to growth and success in filmmaking.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a film editor currently based in Los Angeles. My passion for storytelling led me to pursue a degree in Film Editing at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, where I am nearing completion with graduation expected later this year. I was born in Guizhou, China, and my journey in the film industry began when I graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 2019 with a degree in Screenwriting.
Having a background as a screenwriter has provided me with a unique perspective on storytelling. I approach editing with a keen focus on narrative efficiency and pacing, recognizing its vital role in bringing a story to life. My ultimate goal is to create a profound emotional connection with the audience through the seamless integration of visual and audio elements.
Through my four years of screenwriting training, I developed a deep understanding of the distinct audio-visual language of film. I became captivated by the allure of montage and the pivotal role that an editor plays in shaping the narrative. This realization served as a catalyst for my decision to pursue a career in film editing.
I am truly passionate about my craft and dedicated to honing my skills. Each project is an opportunity for me to delve deeper into my artistic expression and contribute to the power of storytelling. I am excited to continue my journey in the world of film editing, utilizing my unique background and skills to create impactful and memorable cinematic experiences.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
As a dedicated film editor, I approach every project with seriousness and commitment. From editing various genres like comedy, action, and even horror films, I have embraced challenges and expanded my skills. Despite my initial fear of horror films, I took on a horror-themed project, watching numerous movies to gain expertise and a sense of accomplishment. Building strong relationships with collaborators, I respect and understand the directors’ creative vision, working tirelessly to help bring their ideas to life. Through dedication and collaboration, I aim to contribute to the realization of their artistic vision and create impactful films.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, I believe the most valuable thing we can do is bring aesthetic experiences to people’s lives. Art goes beyond material wealth, offering a different kind of happiness when we appreciate beautiful music, captivating films, or encounter magnificent sculptures. It enriches our existence and distinguishes life from mere survival. Additionally, art allows us, as individuals, to leave a lasting imprint on the universe, transmitting our energy and fulfilling our greatest satisfaction by sharing our creations with others and the world at large.
