We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Young’n Destined a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Young’n , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to become an artist almost as soon as I started my education journey in elementary, I always had the desire to be on a stage in front of a crowd performing whether its dancing, singing in talent shows or even that national anthem. Once I got to middle school my desires became a little more serious as I had a vendor introduced to me that started teaching me the basics of creating music, which then made me fall in love even more with the path to ultimately decide this is what I want to do, and as I’ve grown throughout the years the more serious the choice gets.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
How I ultimately got into wanting to pursue the music industry started simply at an Easter church event. During service prior to easter the pastor mentioned an Easter event and it would involve singing, rapping, dancing, and I knew I just wanted to be apart of the festivities. I got connected with the coordinator of the event where they introduced me to my cousin “Watchmane” who was already pursing the music industry. The reaction I received that morning was explosive, a reaction I had never received before . It felt really good and that was the moment ultimately I knew I wanted to be an artist. So for the first few years of being an artist I was being guided by my older cousin, in which we traveled around to a few different cities to perform, and eventually opening up for Tamela Mann, And Orlando Rodriguez.
I figured out very early I’d say maybe 12 years old I knew music was what I wanted to do. I always understood it was a game of endurance and to quit tomorrow would erase any chances of being successful. What sets me apart from others in the music is one; the authenticity, of course I do it to entertain but I also do it to tell my story. Second the drive to never quit, the ambition behind my action pushes me into different rooms, where I know I can ultimately meet the right connections to help me push and come out successful.
The type of music I make today is not the same music I made as a 12 year old boy not knowing fully how to explain what he has endured with physical and mental challenges and how through the music I could put it into a story people would love to hear. I make music to motivate anyone working towards their dreams. I make music to touch the heart whether it’s creating music for the female audience, or my out the mud story telling which then reaches anyone with a desire to win. Everything is factual no made up fabrications.
A few moments that I can say Im most proud of currently is; When I got the opportunity to open up for the legend ‘Royce Da 5’9″ at Garden Theatre in Detroit, MI. Honesty that may still to this day be the biggest audience I have been placed in front of. Another moment is a little more current dated but I had the opportunity to feature ‘Westside Boogie” on my most current released project “Rare Hybrid” Available on all digital streaming platforms.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
What drives me in my journey is; I know I cannot give up, if I do the talent and story all goes to waste. The purpose was always to tell my story and whatever experiences Im going through. The goal is always to be successful and reach the consumer with the music. I’d say my main goal is to reach the masses and provide a lifestyle for my son that I did not have.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Forsure there’s so many resources that I didn’t have or even know about as I started the journey. Whether its Dj’s, radio connections, promoters, marketing, managers, A&R’s, investors. The list can literally go on for days because everyday I learn more and more about the music industry. Even getting paid out my publishing from ASCAP. All these things make a huge difference in an artists career and with none of that the music doesn’t move anywhere, no one hears it.
