Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Young XOX. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Young , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
Before I started rapping in October of 2021, I would cookup beats everyday after school, I sold a lease to a guy for $20 a few weeks after I started producing and sold a few more leases since then, I mainly focus on rapping now but I still Engineer and mix my own music, and cookup occasionally.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Im an 18 year old artist & producer from Chicago. I moved to San Antonio at the start of 2022 But I still go back to see everyone, make music and network every few months. I started making beats in the pandemic and fell in love with it. I really was intrigued with the underground scene in hip hop, it reminds me of the 2017 SoundCloud era. I started rapping about a year ago, I dropped my first single on November 14th, 2021 and I’ve dropped around 30 singles independently and mixed + engineered all my music along with a majority of my cover arts being done by me too. One of my songs I dropped in June of this year has had a buzz on Spotify and I’ve gained 7,500 streams with no promotion the past few months. Im gearing up to drop my first album “Mahoney: The Album” Very soon, this album is going to be an evolution of my sound that I’m confident could Make noise in the underground scene. I’m most proud of how I do everything independently, A lot of rappers just rap, they don’t know how to Do things themself. When you do it yourself you save thousands and thousands of dollars, and It’s dope and more self made.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel like hip hop fans Are so focused on Sales and streams and missing the old sound of Artists, people need to understand As artists we want to evolve and push our music to Another level and be versatile, and not everything’s gonna sound the same forever. Some artists music sound the same, and most of their careers have fell off.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Knowing people listen to my music is the best feeling ever, like across apple Spotify and SoundCloud alone I have over 11,000 streams Which surprises me because I’ve yet to invest any money into promotion. When Mahoney: The album drops im Gonna invest into promotion and drop some music videos.
