We recently connected with Young Prince and have shared our conversation below.
YP, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
Very cliché to say but my mother is my hero . As a single mom she always made things happen for me and my brother and to this day i couldn’t tell you how . She’s taught me to always find solutions and not excuses. She’s hammered in my head that first impressions are everything in life which is why i do my best to leave everyone i meet with a lasting impression. Biggest lesson was to always strive to be the best in all that i do that piece of advice follows me everywhere i go and has shaped my mindset when it comes to how serious i take my craft .
Young , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an Event Host / Mc . Anything that needs a host that will bring energy , good vibes , jokes, etc i am your guy . Clients usually tell me they get tired of the same old boring MC’s who are monotone and appreciate the life i bring to events . I was always the life of the party/ class clown so my path to this craft was inevitable . My first major event was a fashion show at LIU Brooklyn in 2014 and since the. I have not looked back . My versatility is what sets me apart from others . Growing up in New York City i was raised around so many different cultures and it helped me understand them so i can full flourish in front of any crowd no matter the demographic . I’m happy that I’ve grown to the stage where i can perform in front of a sold out arena like Madison square garden or a packed out stadium in Ghana at afrochella . It speaks to how far I’ve come as an entertainer and also how far the African culture has come to headline events like this. I want people to know that I’m proud of my culture and my goal is to make the world smile one event at a time .
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to get out of thinking networking was “brown nosing” we call it something else in New York but it’s a bit explicit so I’ll leave it at that . Basically i felt like networking wasn’t genuine and just seemed to be something that people did to look important or just be around certain people . I had to realize that this is a tool needed to advance . I’m in these rooms for a reason and these people have a common goal and can help me achieve what i would like to . Since I’ve had this mindset I’ve connected and actually become real life friends with some great people who have put me on to great opportunities.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
It wasn’t easy at all and still today i will say it’s not easy . I used to put funny videos on Instagram and Facebook all the time some would do well others wouldn’t . It was discouraging at first but once one or two videos go viral the followers start to go up . My best advice is consistency . Do not be afraid to keep posting no matter the result. You are building content so that when you do eventually blow up people have other things to see. Knowing your insights helps as well . You can see the days and times your followers are most active and then post accordingly . Be intentional with what you are doing and post things that you love and know will resonate with your audience .
