We were lucky to catch up with Young Manic recently and have shared our conversation below.
Young, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I think that learning the craft is very important, but it’s also something that happens naturally as you practice. I think it’s even more important to learn the business side of things. From the type of material made, to making a connection with it, and marketing it. The connection is key, but you don’t want to go out of the way to try to make something that connects with the vast majority. That would feel disingenuous. Instead focus on making what you enjoy and take pride in. Like-minded people will gravitate towards that and will keep coming back for more. That’s how you establish what we call your “core audience”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello,
My name is Young Manic and I’m a rapper out of Michigan. I started rapping at a young age, started recording as a teenager, and began taking it more seriously after highschool. I’ve always loved art in all of its forms. That was a big motivator for me. My family is big on music. I’ve worked with artists such as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Big Herk, & Kxng Crooked, and opened for many others. Including co-headlining with Twista. This is something I knew I would do since a young age, wether it was going to be the only thing I did or a hobby even. It’s more of a lifestyle than anything.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of the biggest goals and drivers on my journey is to get recognized for my work and earn respect. Gaining fans is one of the hardest things to do when trying to get established. One of the biggest things that’s helped me has been getting the recognition from other established artists and getting their co-sign. As that really helps fans gravitate towards you.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The biggest reward for me musically is finding out how much a creation has moved someone or how much someone enjoys it. I love being able to have an impact on people’s lives in that way. It’s not always about creating something motivational, but just creating moods and vibes. People will use that as a tool depending on how they’re feeling, and it can be people’s escape from hard truths or it can be healing. I really love that.
