We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful You Were Never Lovelier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with You Were Never Lovelier below.
Alright, You Were Never Lovelier thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I was playing guitar at a summer camp and one of my best friends there, who was teaching me how to skateboard, randomly threw $1 into my guitar case, and I said, “What is this for?” He explained it was a token of gratitude, and my 15-year-old mind was blown that my friend just gave me money. I have that $1 taped to the inside of my guitar case.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been making music since I was probably 5 years old, when my dad started teaching me piano. What started off as dancing around with my sister to the built-in demos on the keyboard is now what I do everyday. I write, teach, produce, and perform music in lots of genres, but pop punk is my passion. It’s just energetic, raw, and you can sing your heart out, and I like all of that. “You Were Never Lovelier” is my band/artist name, and I strive to make meaningful music, covering themes like loneliness, eating disorders, and self-love.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is when someone messages me about how a song helped them process something difficult or talks to me after a show and says, “I really needed that. Thank you for sharing your music and message” because it reinforces the fact that I’m adding value to the world. And it’s nice to know people like your art.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
After college I wanted to get working on my career ASAP. I met someone who talked to me about being a van-lifer and thought that would be an interesting way to move to a different city with little cash needed. So, when winter was about to hit in Indiana (my home state), I left in my car for a job in Houston. Yes, I said, “car”, not “van”. It was very uncomfortable to sleep in at night. Also, the job totally fell through, so I applied to a private music lessons instructor job, and that’s how I got involved in teaching. I saved up and bought a van, converted it myself, and moved to Los Angeles.
