Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yotam Weiss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Yotam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I was playing and studying music and sound design since a young age, at school, private lessons, self thought etc’. With both music and sound design I just tried to go through as many instruments and softwares that came across my world.
I feel that i’ve learned the most crucial lessons when I started being a professional in those fields, which pretty much means taking jobs and bring results to your clients. I think that there is a big gap between what you learn as a student and what you learn in the professional world so the best advise for myself knowing what i know today will be to commit and engage sooner, it took my a while to “allow” myself to become a professional, and looking backward it was all about trusting myself, my craft and the process.
A general obstacle for me was understanding that being a freelance in the music market it’s a completely different game than having any other office/normal type of jobs, being my own boss, taking responsibility, be humble and shape your craft 24/7, challenging myself with myself and not with any other professional in my field and realizing that only excellence will bring results.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a musician and a sound designer, my main instrument is drums and as a sound designer I’m most comfortable with Abelton but can find myself around any DAW software that exist. My career started in an unexpected way, before music and sound I was actually working in a hi tech company as a manager operations and studied production and manufacturing engineering, everything changed in a day, when my first band was offered a recording deal, which later on led me into leaving my job and studies, move out of my country and pursue a career in music. For the last three years I’m fortunate to play drums and being the band leader for Jessie Murph. We’ve been playing shows all around the world, traveling constantly and always fully engaged in developing the show to the next level we’re aiming for. I was also doing the sound design and playback for David Blaine show in his Las Vegas residency for the last two years, which was very interesting for me to cross from music more into theater and learn the meaning of that. With both fields, music and sound design or we can call it “show biz” the job is always under time and long hours, the performances should be at it’s top, adjustments are constantly happening and my job is to be there for the talent and make sure they can bring their vision to life and pull out the best performance they’ve ever put out.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When my first band decided to split it was the first time in the early days of my music career that I suddenly had no plan and had to choose to keep pursue a career in music even though i wasn’t really sure what’s going to happen, out of having a very clear plan and a group that supports you, I was out there by myself. fortunately, an opportunity came by, it required a lot, another relocation to a foreign place, establishing musicianship with relatively new people, and the challenges that comes with such a move, but more than anything i was so excited and moved by the opportunity to keep performing, writing and playing music in way that it was so clear to me that this is exactly what I’m going to do. until this day, i’m very grateful to have choose the journey i’m in.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me it’s very simple, knowing I gave everything I could so the performance that i’m a part of will be executed on the best side possible, knowing that we managed to move and touch the people in the crowd and made it a night to remember for them, is worth the world for me. every show from the tiniest to the biggest is being measured that way and that what makes them all the most important, I always remind myself, give everything and expect nothing, be grateful for every little moment, because u were a part of it’s creation.
