Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yoshi Obayashi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yoshi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Since I’ve worked in the adult business, people tend to have many preconceptions. Through my standup comedy, I think I’m helping to humanize the people I’ve met in this industry and dispel some of the negative ideas people might have. Porn people are some of the best people I’ve met in my life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into adult business first working for one of the main adult store in Seattle in 1999 (while doing comedy shows at night). I was employed there for four years in adult retail businesses in Seattle; even after getting teargassed during the WTO riots, I still worked my night shift. Eventually, I reached the highest echelons of the industry, working for prestigious yet controversial studio Evil Angel. There, he produced DVDs for famed porn directors Rocco Siffredi, Joey Silvera, John Stagliano, John Leslie and Christof Clark. When Evil Angel’s owner John Stagliano was prosecuted for obscenity by the U.S. Justice Department, Yoshi saw the overreaching power of the government. (The case ended in an acquittal.) He also contributed to “Illegal Magazine,” part of a Copenhagen-based harm reduction effort that supplies street addicts with publications to sell for their own profit.
I travel extensively so I do comedy at night and visit sex/terrorist/serial killer related places. Using my knowledge in the adult businesses, macabre stories and oddball POV, I’m a frequent guest for podcast. I have appeared on prominent comedy podcasts like David Choe’s DVDASA, Tom Segura & Christina P’s Your Mom’s House, and the Joe Rogan Experience.
In addition to producing porn documentaries, I provide consultation covering adult businesses.
Currently, I’m in the final phase of his new stage show, “Adult Content.” This show that presents my various life stories in and out of the world of pornography. Some funny, some sad, and some so shocking that I still can’t believe the places the business has led me to. Some of those crazy highlights include attending Ghislaine Maxwell’s verdict and sentencing, as well as the penalty ruling against Elizabeth Holmes; visiting most of Jeffrey Epstein’s properties; arguing with Mr. Curb aka Larry David; and visiting Washington, DC to assist on a book project on the sexual proclivities of terrorists.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Growing up without a father, I wish I’d had a successful and wise mentor.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I got fired from my adult entertainment job, I began to step up my travels around the world. Most of my friends and family members are afraid to travel, and find every excuse not to. Even without a job, I doubled down and have visited nearly 70 countries. Doing standup in different places has honed my skills in connecting with people, which has been an advantage when podcasting.
