SubscribeAlright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yoo Seon Veronica Hwang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yoo Seon Veronica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
I see Korean skincare is being acknowledged all over social media, especially Titock and Instagram. I see many clients not really knowing what Korean skincare is but wishing to get in on the new trend. The biggest trend in social media is Korean skincare products. All the online shopping of skincare especially from Olive Young global shop is really pushing skincare to the west. This is where I see people dive in first. My thoughts on this trend is that Korean skincare is not a trend! Korean skincare has been pretty solid in innovation, technology and quality/age old asian ingredients for years now.
I believe the “trend” spread to the western hemisphere in the last 5 yrs after K-pop BTS and the entertainment explosion in America! Korea is reaching a wider audience and it is spreading like a wildfire. What I love to address beyond the trend from social media is the fundamentals of Korean skincare and self care.
Koreans value their time in healthy skin, they prioritize their skin maintenance equally for men and women. It is really about the concept of skin health and the “normalization” of routine visits to your esthetician, dermatologist and daily skincare at home. Receiving a facial treatment in Korea is a weekly thing, it is just part of everyday life. My hope is to spread this to everyone who is interested in learning about Korean skincare. It is beyond just products from Korea.
Growing up in Korea, beauty and health go hand in hand. I was detoxing in herbal steam rooms in my toddler age with my family. By the time I was 13 years old, my mom had me on a 5 step daily skincare routine. In Korea, EVERYONE invests in their skin. We take pride in our self care and think of it as a healing rite and health maintenance. I want to share that with everyone who comes into Yoo Be Korean Skincare and Wellness. I believe when we feel good on the outside, we feel good on the inside.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a child living in Korea, it was very common for the whole family to take a spa day on Sundays. Weekends were the time for bathing rituals with your family and it was required as homework in school for hygiene. For me going to the Korean spa was my fondest and my first memory in self care. My family and I would undress, soak, scrub, sit and steam away our toxins and stresses. As a child I would play in the waters as the elders relaxed and it was a space where people came to just be. I always felt so blissed and content, it was my church and it will always be my place of sanctuary. I also grew up with an autoimmune skin disease that really took over my body at age 18.
I was forced to learn about my body and my inflammation but had no idea where to start. I was struggling with western medicine and no one in the western medicine world knew how to help me. Then I met an Esthetician in Boulder, CO through a friend while I was attending college there. I would visit her 2 times a week, then slowly once a month for a year. Within that year, she transformed my skin and my mind. She reminded me that taking care of myself was required and that action alone released my mental stress which in turn was all related to my inflammation . A visit to her was like a therapy session, her compassionate touches and many advice on products started my new adventure to learning about my body better. Today after 27 years, I found myself wishing to help others. I want to share all the knowledge I learned over the years trying to figure out my own skin condition. I have done and ate some crazy things to find my cure and I definitely encourage my clients to be a scientist with me!
To me, skincare is not just a luxury event once a year, it’s a ritual, a maintenance. It goes beyond beauty and vanity. It is a health practice, a mental recharge. I guide each person I work with in their individual journey to a healthy skin and mind. We don’t hide your skin, but work together to embrace and enhance it.
My experience in my own skin journey has given me a special strength and knowledge that brings my craft higher than others. It’s funny how life leads you to where you need to be, although it was painful, I am so grateful for my experiences.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
A great start would be, “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero. It helps readers to start evaluating your relationship with money and confidence in your dreams, especially for women. Although I have opened and managed my family businesses in my past life, Yoo Be Korean skincare and wellness is my very own first small business. When I shifted from the art/animation world to my small business in Korean skincare, I had a very different relationship to money. This book opened up my own stuck and limited feelings about money and my lack of and living as an artist. I was compelled to re-educate myself. I dived into podcasts and audiobooks about budget, debt free, finance, real estate, F.I.R.E and having the life I wanted to build. Not just “manifesting” but doing the work. “You are a Badass” philosophy opened me up to believe in myself, I know it’s a bit cheesy, but it’s true!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Do the best job you can and stay on top of your game by educating yourself. DO YOUR BEST and give LOVE is my fundamental attitude in life. When you do your best with loving energy, there are no regrets. It is an equal part of hard work, good vibes and knowing your craft.
In this business there are many trends, many people in and out, but if you stay grounded in your own values and give with kindness, people sense that. Clients know if they are being appreciated and helped, we all know the right energy when we feel it. When clients feel this vibe, they come back and spread the word because they want to help you too! So, DO YOUR BEST, like when your kindergarten teacher told you on your first day of school.
