We recently connected with Yoni Sonis and have shared our conversation below.
Yoni, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents were a great support factor when I started my art career and even till today I still get advice from them. Both my parents immigrated to the United States from Argentina with little to nothing and managed to work hard and provide tools for me to experiment my creativity. When I was younger I was interested in many things whether it was painting or video editing, and my parents would always be very encouraging of whatever creative outlet I chose. Now that I’m older they give me valuable advice, and one thing that my father always brings up is to be bold with my art – to always push the envelope. It’s definitely words that help motivate me every time I walk into the studio.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Yoni Sonis aka YONSON, I’m a self taught digital artist based out of Miami Florida. My work explores the theme of human connection in a digital realm, often introducing relevance to abstract compositions and surreal environments. I’ve been fortunate to work with clients such as Apple, Syndey Opera House, NBC Universal, Sony Music, and many more.
Jumping into a career of creating art for clients happened accidently. I am really into music and wanted to find a way to go to music festivals for free. So I would reach out to musicians/DJ’s from the festival poster I wanted to go to, and offer my art services for that show in exchange for a ticket. At first, I had a lot of read messages with no replies until techno legend Dubfire gave me a chance and things just snowballed from there. Fast forward 4 years, I now have my own 3D animation studio with artist and friend Jacob Stillman (StillmanVisual). We tackle all type of client projects from stage visuals, cover arts, music videos, to product ads, digital campaigns, and animations.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to spark inspiration in another person.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Definitely would give the FUTUR podcast on Youtube a listen. All small business can benefit from Chris Do’s teachings and it really hits home him being specifically in the creative industry.
