We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yolanda Dowe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yolanda below.
Yolanda, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
One of the biggest complaints, concerns or loves about natural hair is dealing with frizz. That’s why Frizzy Tresses Studio was born.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After many years of using relaxers, wearing weaves and braids, I took the plunge and came home to the Sisterlocks® family. This journey has been one of the best decisions ever! It completely changed my relationship with hair boosting a new level of love, strength, courage, patience, confidence and self-pride. As an African American woman, I see so many ladies that struggle when it comes to hair and everything associated with it. I get a ton of questions and love to talk about hair and transitioning to a natural hair regimen. That’s when Frizzy Tresses Studio was born.
My business is a natural hair care business which establishes and maintains Sisterlocks® and microlocs on women, men and children. What exactly are Sisterlocks®? Sisterlocks® (founded and created by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell) are tiny uniform locks (sometimes called dreadlocks) formed by using a specific parting grid and the use of a specialized tool to guide the hair into it’s locking formation. They are very similar to interlocking whereas no products are used. The small size and parting grid form about 400 easily styled locks. By moving over to a natural hair style like Sisterlocks® or microlocs, it provides hair freedom, saves money on buying a ton of products and promotes healthy hair growth. I am very proud to have earned the title of Certified Sisterlocks® Consultants which included intense training and submitting samples of my work for critic, feedback, and approval to move forward which sets me apart from other locticians. I love seeing the transformation that hair goes through when transitioning to a loc’d crown lifestyle. By taking progress pictures and showing clients the beginning and current status throughout their hair journey sparks a great love of their locs as well. I also wore Sisterlocks® for over 11 years so I understand the changes involved and journey as a whole. I want the world to know that I LOVE loc’d crowns and can’t wait to rejoin the community in the near future. “Loc it up, leave it alone and love on ’em!” ~Yolanda
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Being listed on Sisterlocks® main website under certified consultants, Instagram and existing client referrals have been my main source of new clients.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Believe it or not, my hair business took off during the pandemic. Many women were at a lost of what to do with their hair when the world shut down and they were not able to get to a stylist for maintenence. At times, I had to turn some women away or recommend another loctician for them to reach out to because I could not handle the influx of potentially new clients. I also work a 9 to 5 and juggling both became too much. As my skillset grew, my confidence grew which kept me on the path to growing my business. In just over 3 years, I have tripled my client base while continously working a 9 to 5.
