We were lucky to catch up with Yolanda Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yolanda, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
More Than Just Words
We live in an age of constant noise, where every scroll, every click, every digital interaction screams for attention. In this cacophony, how does a voice truly break through? How does a message not just land, but linger? For me, it’s never been about the cleverest headline or the most optimized keyword. It’s about something far more fundamental: the authentic pulse of a mission, beating strong and clear beneath every single word.
This isn’t just the story of CopyWrite Brown℠. This is the story of why I believe so fiercely in the power of a genuine mission, and why it became the bedrock of everything I do.
The Genesis: Seeds Planted in Shared Spaces, Quiet Moments – And a Lifelong Calling
My journey into the world of optimizing human experience through compelling content didn’t begin with a business plan; it started in childhood, a whisper that became a lifelong pursuit. At the tender age of seven, I declared my future path: I would be a teacher, an artist, and a pastor. Looking back, these weren’t disparate dreams, but different facets of a singular calling: to connect, to illuminate, and to inspire.
Most of my professional life has been dedicated to this core impulse: communicating about things people thought they knew, with a unique ability to take the abstract and make profound meaning. Whether it was expanding pedestrian knowledge to create a broader understanding for educated patrons of arts and culture, fostering more compassionate parents for my art students, or empowering educators to fiercely advocate for themselves and their programs, the common thread was always clarity, empathy, and joy. I learned early on that communicating in a way that was humane, expansive, and profoundly fun was the key to unlocking understanding and building genuine connections.
Interestingly, I launched my business after years of receiving compliments on my intuitive wordsmithing. People were constantly asking me to review their writing, read drafts, or complimenting my lesson plans. I didn’t have a formal degree or training in writing; I was simply a voracious reader and a lover of words. As a visual learner, I taught myself how to write all kinds of texts—from complex academic articles for journals and compelling speeches, to precise press releases, vitas, and resumes. I had to quickly learn the specific lingo of diverse fields like banking, sales, education, and non-profits. This experience showed me I was in the company of many peers who needed to diminish their learning curves around their messaging, and I knew I could write, edit, and coach them through it.
It’s this lifelong inclination that fuels the work I do today with entrepreneurs and creative artists. I’ve always been drawn to the profound potential of human connection, particularly within the nascent yet powerful world of cohousing and intentional communities. I’ve walked the land, listened to the dreams, and observed the struggles of individuals striving to build something different – affordable, multigenerational, and crucially, inclusive BIPOC communities. Beyond these vibrant living arrangements, my fascination extends to the practical, nurturing aspects of human well-being: the sustainable practices of small-scale farming and community gardening, and the crucial role of green/renewable energy in creating truly optimized, healthy futures. It’s a vision that lights me up, a yearning for belonging and support that I see echoed across generations and cultures.
But as my awareness grew, so did my disillusionment with much of the prevailing marketing landscape. I do not like the bamboozling and tomfoolery involved in the “funnel-focused” messaging that many brands and leaders push. It’s often a relentless “buy, buy, buy” mentality, devoid of any real connection to the lived experiences of the people being sold to. Frankly, it’s gross.
My convictions align deeply with the sentiments of Dr. Gabor Maté, who eloquently critiques a system that prioritizes profit over genuine human well-being, fostering false needs and undermining our health for the sake of consumption. I saw brilliant minds, overflowing with purpose, getting ensnared in these very demands of “content creation” – spending precious hours wrestling with bios, blogs, and social media, when their true genius lay elsewhere.
There was a palpable exhaustion, a silent toll taken by the relentless pursuit of online visibility within this often disingenuous paradigm. And then, it clicked.
The Revelation: Rest, Repurposing, and Radiant Impact
My journey into becoming a fierce advocate for rest wasn’t a strategic business pivot; it was a deeply personal revelation that became the missing piece of my professional puzzle. I realized that the best ideas, the most innovative solutions, the most impactful messages don’t emerge from burnout; they bloom from a place of genuine replenishment.
How could someone optimize human experience – their own, or that of their community – if they were constantly depleted? How could a founder articulate their profound mission if they were too tired to think clearly, much less write compellingly? This aligns with Maté’s insights: a system that drains our meaning and health cannot foster true human optimization.
This realization transformed my approach. It clarified my why. It also led me to champion content repurposing, which perfectly embodies these very values. It’s about being curious about new ways to use existing content, collaborating with others to bring those ideas to life, and accepting that there’s always room for growth and improvement. Many business owners tell me they struggle with the time, the know-how, and the consistency needed to produce content. Constantly churning out brand-new material can feel like cooking a fresh meal every single day – exhausting! Repurposing offers a smarter, more sustainable path.
My mission became profoundly simple, yet revolutionary in its implications: to serve as an ally and partner to HumanLifeOptimizers™—those dedicated to creating an optimal human experience—by freeing them to focus on their unique genius, while I craft the compelling content that amplifies their impact.
Why This Mission Resonates (and Why It’s Meaningful for YOU)
This isn’t just a corporate statement; it’s the beating heart of CopyWrite Brown℠. It’s meaningful to me because:
It’s about Liberation from the “Buy, Buy, Buy” Cycle and Content Churn: Every entrepreneur, every creative, every thought leader has a finite amount of energy. My mission is to liberate them from the burden of content overwhelm and the insidious pressure of transactional, inhumane marketing. When I take on the strategic content-heavy lifting – the story arcs, the blog pitches, the consistent messaging, and crucially, the strategic repurposing of content – I’m not just writing; I’m giving them back precious time and mental space. Time they can reinvest in their core mission, in their families, or simply in the restorative rest that fuels true creativity, rather than chasing false needs.
It’s about Amplification of True Value (Not Just Noise): The world needs the transformative work of my clients. Whether they’re building sustainable food systems, guiding neurodiverse adults, or fostering healthy intimacy, their messages deserve to be heard with clarity and impact, not lost in the noise of unauthentic selling. My mission is to be the voice multiplier, ensuring their authentic stories reach the ideal audiences who are ready to engage and be transformed by genuine connection, not manipulated by superficial funnels. Content Leftovers™, my signature repurposing program, is a direct manifestation of this. It ensures your valuable insights gain maximum mileage, reaching different audiences on their preferred platforms, without constant reinvention.
It’s about Authenticity in Action – Countering the “Cult of the Self”: I help clients craft content that feels genuine, content that builds community and understanding rather than just a profit margin. My own mission is built on this principle. I don’t just advocate for rest; I practice it. I don’t just talk about authentic communication; I strive for it in every interaction. This mission holds me accountable, ensuring CopyWrite Brown℠ remains true to its own values, making our partnership with clients even more resonant and a deliberate counter-narrative to the profit-over-people mindset.
It’s about Building the Future, Together – A Humane Approach: My personal dream of developing affordable, multigenerational, BIPOC communities is intertwined with my professional mission. By supporting HumanLifeOptimizers™ in cohousing and intentional communities, small-scale farming, aging services, and crucial areas like green/renewable energy and community wellness, I am indirectly contributing to the very fabric of the future I envision – a future where well-being is prioritized over blind consumption, and where genuine connection triumphs over superficial selling. Their success is a ripple effect, building the world I hope to leave behind.
The Ripple Effect: My Mission, Your Freedom
When you connect with CopyWrite Brown℠, you’re not just hiring a content strategist or a copywriter. Yolanda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My Journey: From Childhood Calling to Content Ally
My path began at seven, when I declared I’d be a teacher, artist, and pastor. This was my lifelong commitment to connecting, illuminating, and inspiring. Throughout my career, I’ve specialized in making complex ideas profoundly clear, always prioritizing communication that’s humane, expansive, and profoundly fun.
My writing expertise isn’t rooted in formal degrees, but in being a voracious reader and visual learner. I taught myself to craft everything from academic articles to resumes, quickly mastering the language of diverse sectors like banking, sales, and non-profits. CopyWrite Brown℠ organically grew from years of peers seeking my intuitive wordsmithing and recognizing their need to diminish messaging learning curves.
My personal journey through the arts and education (museums, higher ed, K12) profoundly fuels my work. While I continue to serve entrepreneurs and creative artists, I am now actively beginning to dedicate more of my service to the world of cohousing and intentional communities, with a keen focus on fostering affordable, multigenerational, and inclusive BIPOC spaces. My passion further extends to championing small-scale farming, community gardening, and green/renewable energy—each a crucial component for true holistic well-being.
I’m also driven by what I stand against: the “bamboozling and tomfoolery” of “funnel-focused” marketing that prioritizes relentless “buy, buy, buy” over genuine connection. This transactional approach, aligning with Dr. Gabor Maté’s critique of profit over human well-being, showed me how vital it is to counter burnout among purpose-driven individuals. This led to my profound realization that rest is crucial for impactful work.
This is where my mission truly locked into place: to wholeheartedly free HumanLifeOptimizers™ to channel every ounce of their authentic genius, rather than squandering it on the relentless hamster wheel of productivity within the capitalist cosplay. Let’s be clear—revenue is the oxygen keeping our ventures alive. Yet, I passionately believe we can cultivate abundance without sacrificing our essence, without becoming mere kindling tossed into a hungry, never-satisfied flame. If that resonates, you’re speaking my language! If you’re nodding along, then you truly understand the heart of what I do!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As small business owners and creatives, we all face moments that demand a shift, a re-evaluation of our path. For me, the story of a significant pivot isn’t just about a change in business strategy; it’s about a deep alignment with my core values of peace, joy, pleasure, and freedom.
Early in my journey with CopyWrite Brown℠, like many new entrepreneurs, I cast a wide net. I worked with anyone who came my way, eager to help. While every experience offered lessons, I often found myself drained, trying to force connections that simply weren’t a fit. I was spending countless hours in what I’ve come to call the “funnel-focused pits” of networking. These were environments where the emphasis was purely transactional—about quick sales, fleeting connections, and a relentless “buy, buy, buy” mentality, often lacking genuine awareness, education, or nurturing relationships.
It simply made no sense to keep going to endless networking events or engaging in one-on-ones with individuals who prioritized short-term gains over mutual respect, gratitude, or truly transformative relationships. This approach felt diametrically opposed to my nature.
The pivot was a conscious decision to move away from anything that went against my default state of peace, joy, pleasure, and freedom. I realized that to truly thrive, both personally and professionally, I needed to work with people who shared my values and understood the deeper purpose behind their work.
So, I made a decisive shift: I narrowed my focus quite specifically to entrepreneurs and creative artists, particularly those who are nascent to seasoned professionals, falling within the Gen X and Baby Boomer demographics. This wasn’t a random choice; I am deeply a part of these communities. Dedicating the core of my focus to these professionals felt not just ideal, but essential.
This pivot wasn’t just about refining my target market; it was about reclaiming my energy and aligning my business with my life’s philosophy. It allowed me to move from a place of reaction to one of intention, building high-frequency relationships with clients and peers who genuinely seek transformation, not just transactions. Now, my work is infused with the joy and purpose that comes from truly serving my aligned community, fostering connections built on mutual respect and shared values.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, there are three key types of resources I wish I’d discovered earlier in my creative journey, and they all tie directly into the core of what CopyWrite Brown℠ offers:
The Power of Niching Down Sooner. Early on, I wish I’d understood the immense value of focusing my efforts. I spent too much time trying to be everything to everyone. Identifying and committing to my specific audience—HumanLifeOptimizers™ in areas like intentional communities, green energy, small-scale farming, and wellness—would have accelerated my growth and allowed me to serve those truly aligned with my mission more effectively. It creates clarity, not only for me, but for the clients who need exactly what I offer.
Strategic Content Repurposing Frameworks (like my own Content Leftovers™ programs). I used to spend far too much energy on the “content hamster wheel”—constantly trying to generate new material for every platform. I wish I’d understood sooner how to strategically leverage existing content to reach wider audiences and serve different purposes. Knowing how to transform a single piece of valuable insight into multiple formats, consistently and efficiently, would have saved immense time and prevented burnout. It’s about working smarter, not just harder, and maximizing the inherent value already created.
Developing Scalable Service Offerings Beyond One-to-One Work. While I excelled at writing, editing, and coaching, I wish I had earlier explored and developed ways for clients to work with me beyond direct, bespoke services. Creating workshops, courses, and digital products would have significantly expanded my service reach and, I believe, greatly boosted my revenue. These formats allow me to share my expertise with more people, fostering community and education in a scalable way, which aligns perfectly with my desire to make a broader impact.
These insights—the clarity of niching, the efficiency of smart content leverage, and the power of scalable offerings—are precisely why I built CopyWrite Brown℠ the way I did. They embody my commitment to authentic impact and sustainable entrepreneurship.
