Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yohana Posada. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yohana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
Back when I was 18, I worked at a dry cleaners. Some of the hottest summers were spent there, no AC in south Texas, whew! But I was a hard worker, and I was young so I didn’t mind. Thru my time there, I got to work with an amazing woman. She was new to town, just opened the business with two little ones in tow. She was great! Not only was she the best boss I’ve ever had, but she was my inspiration to one day become a woman business owner. Our customers loved her, she was so kind and understanding with everyone, and she always went out of her way to make her customers leave with a smile. In my current business, this is what I love to implement the most. I build relationships with my customers and get to know them, so they can have an amazing experience every time they order a cake or treat from me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up not knowing exactly what direction I wanted my life to head towards. I always knew I wanted to own my own business one day, but I had too many interests to choose from. My favorite store to go to was Michael’s arts and crafts. I enjoyed everything from kitting, to painting, and especially cake and treat making. That was my one stop shop for everything artistic. I would watch The Cake Boss on TV and was always mesmerized by Buddy Velastros creations. I always thought, hey! Maybe I could make that one day! Fast forward to college, I still was unsure what I wanted to do, so I started studying business. When I was 21 I met my now husband, and shortly after we found out I was preagnant. That put a big halt in my college career to say the least. We decided I’d be a stay at home mom to raise our daughter. I moved to a new city, away from my family and friends. My time was spent mostly in the kitchen. And that’s when I started experimenting. My first “masterpieces” weren’t that great looking back, I mainly made cakes for friends and family as a hobby. Little by little I began teaching myself new techniques, designs, trends, etc. Google and YouTube were my best friends. And there began my business, Savannah’s Treats, which I decided to name after my daughter Savannah. I’ve come a long way improving my skills, marketing myself, and building relationships with my clients. I beleive that the relationships I’ve built with my clients has set me apart so much. Before social media was a big part of self promoting, the main thing that got you noticed was word of mouth. I have so many customers that have been referred to me by others, or have seen and tasted my cakes, and they have become my loyal customers. I’ve built so many friendships thru out the years, and that’s what keeps my customers happy and comming back. I know what they like, flavor preferences, style preferences, etc. Today, I am so proud of all that I have accomplished since I began, I look back and I am amazed at all the work I have done to get here. Although it isn’t easy being a full time mom and owning a business at the same time, I love what I do! For those who don’t know me much, just check out my Instagram so you can see what I have to offer, I don’t just make pretty cakes, they are delicious too! I hope you can be another one of my amazing clients!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There are many things that drive me to continue doing what I do! But the main thing driving me is the love for my family. This exact time last year, my husband was hospitalized for over a month, had multiple surgeries, and was out of work for months after. It was at this time that I realized how blessed I was to be able to stay home with him and my girls, and also help provide for our family at the same time. I never expected that my “little” hobby would turn into this, but I thank God every day for allowing me to be doing what I do. Because of my business, I am able to be home with my girls, participate in school activities, be a part of the PTA, and help provide for our family. My only mission in life, is to have a happy and healthy family, and thanks to my creativity, I am on track to fulfill that goal.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner/co-founder is credited as my husband. I met him thru a mutual friend who decided to set us up at my father in laws birthday party. I met the whole family all at once ha ha. We started talking that night and clicked right away! Funny enough, I had gone out on a date right before the party, spoiler alert! That didn’t work out! Fast forward a couple of years, I had been making a few cakes and treats for friends and family for a little while, when one day I look online and my husband decides to create a page for my “business” we had talked about it, but I didn’t think I was ready just yet. We’ll, that gave me the push I needed to get this started. And over 10 years later here I am all thanks to my husband/co-founder.
