We recently connected with Yiwen Qian and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yiwen, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
“What’s wrong with your back?” These words, spoken by my mother, came after a normal dance practice. I had just showered and was drying my hair when my mother, who was standing behind me, saw something unusual. She swept away my hair to examine my back, which looked unbalanced. I had experienced pain while dancing before, but I thought it was just regular wear and tear from such an arduous activity. However, after a visit to the hospital, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and was recommended for immediate surgery. The thought of lying on an operating table while surgeons inserted steel rods into my spine terrified me, as it would likely mean the end of my dance career. Instead of surgery, I took the risk of pursuing a non-surgical treatment, which required me to endure painful daily exercises and wear a hard brace for twenty hours a day. It was an intense, uncertain path, but I was determined to keep dancing. The risk paid off, allowing me to continue my passion and deepening my appreciation for every movement I could still make. I no longer view my condition as an obstacle; instead, I view it as motivation, something that pushes me to understand why I love dance. This experience taught me that taking bold risks, even when the odds are daunting, can lead to incredible growth and the preservation of what matters most.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into the world of filmmaking began at a young age, sparked by a significant role I played in a feature film during Grade 7. This early experience introduced me to the magic of storytelling through performance and ignited a deep curiosity within me. As I transitioned into high school, I found myself increasingly drawn to the intricate craft of filmmaking. It wasn’t just the technical aspects that fascinated me, but the profound impact that stories could have on people’s lives. I became captivated by the power of film to challenge perceptions, evoke genuine emotions, and create connections between individuals from diverse backgrounds. This transformative potential of storytelling fueled my passion and solidified my decision to pursue a career in the creative arts.
Having recently graduated from New York University (NYU) with a bachelor’s degree in Film & TV, I have been focusing on producing short films and music videos. My work has been recognized at prestigious film festivals, including Oscar-qualifying ones, which has been incredibly validating for me as a young producer. I enjoy the challenge of standing in a producer role, where I get to piece together every aspect of a production and watch as the final project reaches a wide audience. My work spans across different genres and formats, but what remains consistent is my commitment to telling meaningful stories that resonate deeply with audiences. Whether it’s a short film that explores complex human emotions or a music video that visually interprets an artist’s vision, I aim to create works that inspire, challenge, and evoke real emotion.
What sets me apart in this industry is my early start and dedication to honing my craft. Beginning my journey in junior year of high school, I’ve had years to refine my skills and develop a unique eye for capturing beautiful stories, something my mother has often praised. I approach each project with a deep understanding of the narrative’s power and a desire to push creative boundaries. Collaboration and adaptability are key to my process. I work closely with a group of passionate friends who share my commitment to content creation, and together, we strive to produce work that not only entertains but also leaves a lasting impact on our viewers.
One of the achievements I’m most proud of is winning the Prize of the Youth Jury at the 70th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in Germany for a music video I produced. This recognition not only fulfilled a personal dream of visiting Europe again but also reinforced my belief in the global reach of storytelling. We received a statement from the jury saying the music video was “very touching and shows the immense importance one person can have for another.” It was a moment of realization that my work could transcend geographical boundaries and connect with audiences worldwide.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my work is driven by a passion for storytelling that is both authentic and impactful. I am committed to producing high-quality content that resonates on a deep emotional level and challenges viewers to see the world from new perspectives. My goal is to continue creating works that not only entertain but also inspire and connect people from all walks of life. As I continue to grow in my career, I look forward to exploring new opportunities, broadening my creative horizons, and contributing to the ever-evolving world of filmmaking.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to evoke genuine emotions and connect with others through storytelling. There’s something incredibly powerful about taking an idea or a narrative that resonates deeply within me and transforming it into a visual or auditory experience that can touch people from diverse backgrounds. The moment when a viewer sees a piece of my work and feels understood, challenged, or inspired is what drives me. It’s the realization that my creativity has the power to transcend boundaries, bring people together, and spark conversations that might not have happened otherwise. This connection—both to the story and to the audience—is what makes the journey of being an artist so fulfilling.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, reflecting on my creative journey, there are a few resources that would have been incredibly valuable to know about earlier and one of the most important resources is film festivals. Early knowledge of various film festivals and submission platforms, including those that accept short films and student work, would have helped in showcasing work and gaining recognition. Given my personal experience attending festivals, I believe it’s an awesome place to not only get inspired and appreciate what others’ work, but also connect with other creatives, mentors, and industry professionals that are invaluable for personal and professional growth.
