Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yiting Nan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Yiting thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I attended a recent high school reunion with some of my classmates and the thought of what my life would be like if I had pursued a non-art major like the rest of them crossed my mind. However, as the only one in our class who pursued an art career, I feel incredibly grateful for where I am now and the work that I have been doing. Although I sometimes feel exhausted after a long day, seeing my designs and animations come to life and being loved by many people makes it all worthwhile. I am reminded of the passion that drives me to create, and the joy it brings to others.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, I’m Yiting Nan, a designer and animator based in NYC. I started my career as a graphic design student but now work primarily as an animator. My background in graphic design provides me with a unique perspective, allowing me to approach my work from a graphical standpoint. This sets me apart from traditional animators and illustrators. Although I mainly work in digital media now, my appreciation for printmaking inspires me to incorporate some of its unique features into my work when appropriate. I specialize in creating bold, graphical, and vibrant animations that are tailored to each project’s specific concept. I am always eager to take on new challenges and push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of animation.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist or creative, the most rewarding aspect for me is seeing my designs come to life in the real world. It’s incredibly gratifying to see my work being printed on packaging or displayed on screen, knowing that it has the potential to reach and connect with people beyond my immediate circle. It’s amazing to see my designs appreciated and loved by people I have never met, and to know that my art and design work can travel to far-flung places that I never expected. The feeling of creating something that resonates with others and has a positive impact on their lives is truly priceless, and it motivates me to continue creating and pushing the boundaries of my craft.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As a creative, there are certain aspects of the job that non-creatives may not fully understand. One of those aspects is the role of a project manager or producer. They are responsible for managing schedules, relaying feedback from clients to the artists and explaining any necessary adjustments or changes.
Before entering the industry, I had no idea how important these professionals are in bridging the gap between clients and artists. They serve as a vital liaison, especially when clients give frustrating feedback or unrealistic deadlines. Without them, communication between artists and clients can be slow and inefficient.
Their presence not only helps to streamline the communication process, but also allows artists to focus on their craft and be more productive. In essence, project managers and producers serve as a “buffer” between the artist and client, helping to create a more harmonious and efficient working relationship.
