We recently connected with Yiran Guo and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Yiran thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
In the broader creative industry, I’ve noticed a diminishing emphasis on authenticity compared to earlier times. It’s become evident through the growing uniformity in design. Designers and artists increasingly find themselves swayed and molded by popular culture, with a preference for seeking popularity over nurturing their genuine creative identities. Many individuals tend to emulate or conform to prevailing styles in the hopes of attaining fame and success.
I’m of the opinion that this shift isn’t beneficial for the creative industry. When creativity takes a backseat to the pursuit of trends and popularity, it risks becoming stagnant and uninspiring. The core essence of the creative field lies in pushing boundaries, thinking innovatively, and bringing forth unique perspectives. If the primary focus shifts away from authentic creativity and instead leans toward chasing what’s popular, it’s likely that the creative industry will become increasingly predictable and less innovative.
Yiran , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My artistic journey is firmly rooted in traditional forms, but I approach them with a twist that captures the elusive and ethereal essence of dreams. One of my unique techniques involves incorporating vintage photographs and film stills into both two and three-dimensional collages. I also love blending handmade ceramics with discarded and found objects to create intricate small-scale scenes.
Two aspects of my work that hold a special place in my heart are experimental animation and self-published artist books. My animated creations have taken me on a global adventure, gracing the screens of prestigious festivals and even catching the eye of institutions like Johns Hopkins, who’ve invited me to lead filmmaking workshops.
On a different note, my artist books have introduced me to a whole new audience. By presenting them at prominent book fairs and in bookstores, I’ve started to build recognition, and people are beginning to associate me with my unique artistic style. This diverse body of work has provided me with a canvas to explore and expand my creative horizons.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Learning art and embracing the path of an artist have opened up a multitude of possibilities for me. Through this journey, I’ve come to understand that life doesn’t have to adhere to a single, predefined path. Exploring various art mediums and experimenting with new materials has instilled in me the courage to keep pushing boundaries.
For a significant period, I believed I had to confine myself to one specific subject or style in my artistic practice. However, as I delved into different media and subjects, I came to realize that it’s not unreasonable to change and encounter setbacks. In fact, these experiences serve as valuable lessons, bringing me closer to discovering what truly resonates with me.
As I’ve grown bolder in my artistic pursuits, I’ve noticed a profound impact on my overall approach to life. Art has become a source of relaxation, allowing me to achieve a mental state where I fear less, accept change more readily, and embrace life’s inevitable mistakes with greater resilience.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I consider myself a traditional type of creative, where I place great value on tangible things. The material aspect holds significant importance in my practice, and you can see this reflected in my work. Whether it’s through painting or ceramics, I require that tactile connection to create.
For me, the prospect of representing the future or aligning with what might become mainstream doesn’t hold as much significance. I’m committed to creating art in the way that feels most authentic and connected to me. I’m not easily swayed by the allure of the latest trends or what’s considered cutting-edge.
