We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yilin Li a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yilin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
I think innovation is a very critical element for artists. I have been groping on the path of exploration and innovation, trying to find my own artistic language. It is very difficult but also very joyful. A lot of innovation in a short period of time makes my work more attractive, and because of that, the audience for my work has been expanding, which I think is an affirmation for me.
Yilin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an illustrator and an artist. I mainly do work related to these two and some graphic design. Because I studied graphic design and illustration in my undergraduate and graduate studies. The illustration I learned in graduate school is the main direction of my work now, I have done album cover design, illustration for magazine articles, and other related work. My work focuses on young girls as the main characters to illustrate the feelings of the human spirit. I like to draw in a relatively casual way, which can bring a lot of unexpected surprises.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
New clients will have new requirements, which will inspire me more, to the point of exploring more of my potential possibilities. I like new clients because new demands are more interesting. Everyone has different aesthetics and requirements, so it’s more fulfilling to meet the needs of different clients.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe that passion and innovation are two very valuable elements for an artist. It is essential to be creative and to work consistently, and to learn to enjoy your work, which I think is very important!
