We were lucky to catch up with Yihsuan Lu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yihsuan, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My creative journey began when I was very young, thanks to my mom’s love for art. She always encouraged my sister and me to draw and join art classes. In many Asian families, parents usually want their kids to become lawyers, doctors, or teachers, and pursuing art is seen as less common and often not supported. Luckily, my situation was different. My mom has always been super supportive and interested in my art.
Thinking back, I see that my life has always been about art and creating things. The early exposure to art laid the foundation for the career I’m in now.
Looking forward, I’m thankful for the creative upbringing I had. My mom’s constant support not only fueled my love for art but also guided me towards a fulfilling and satisfying professional journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I’m Yihsuan, a graphic designer and illustrator based in Montreal, Canada. I have a strong passion for branding, UX/UI, iconography, and digital design.
My design style is all about vibrant colors, neat layouts, careful line work, and geometric arrangements. I believe in focusing on details because design should not only look good but also be easy for users and consistently well-done.
Originally from Taiwan, I earned two bachelor’s degrees in Graphic Design and Traditional Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, USA. Now, I live in snowy Montreal with my two cats.
I’m excited about the creative opportunities ahead and eager to contribute my skills and passion to the dynamic design scene from Montreal to the world. Take a look at my portfolio or Dribbble to see my design journey and the projects I’ve enjoyed working on.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The best part about being a graphic designer and illustrator is expressing and communicating feelings, thoughts, and views in a special and meaningful way. Art lets me be creative, explore my imagination, and connect with others on a deeper level. It’s amazing how I can grow personally while doing what I love and making a living at the same time.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I don’t believe there’s one specific resource that has profoundly impacted my management and entrepreneurial thinking. My perspective is shaped by a variety of books, videos, and essays. However, the idea of “less is more” stands out to me. This philosophy, rooted in simplicity and efficiency, influences both my design and decision-making processes. It reminds me to focus on essentials and approach challenges with clarity.
