We were lucky to catch up with Yichen Qu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yichen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
In the past few years, I have been honing my musical skills and realizing my creative ambitions as the bassist in the band Absolute Purity. We released our first full-length album “We Fought Over The Moon” in 2022. This experimental rock album won recognition from major streaming platforms and reviewers in mainland China. The album was born under strict traveling restrictions due to Covid-19. Hence, we had to collaborate remotely with our Australian producer Angus Andrew from the band Liars,. At the same time, I was a full-time IT engineer by day. This special inspiring adventure made me realize that the creation of music is what truly fills my heart.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Immersed in the vibrant realms of alternative, synth-pop, post-punk, and experimental music, I navigate the musical landscape with diverse projects. From wielding the guitar in “Naohai” to shaping basslines for “Absolute Purity” and “Forsaken Autumn,” our collaborative ventures birthed acclaimed albums like “The Crowds”, “We Fought Over the Moon”, and “Whenere”. Venturing into solo territory since 2023, I’ve released a compelling full-length album and various singles. Beyond traditional genres, my creative spectrum spans beat-making, commercial compositions, and even film scores, showcasing a dynamic approach to sonic exploration. As I continue this musical odyssey, I carve a niche as a versatile artist pushing boundaries and shaping the evolving soundscape.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, creating music allows me to express my thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a unique and powerful way. It serves as a form of communication that transcends traditional language barriers. Music has the ability to resonate with people on a deep, emotional level. I would find my best reward in connecting with my audience, knowing that my creations can evoke emotions, inspire, and bring people together. Even it’s just a short moment.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in software engineering. I worked as a full-time IT engineer and part-time musician for almost 10 years. Then I decided to pause my engineering life for a bit, to pursue my dream in music. I enrolled in the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles and came here from my hometown Shanghai. I started to realize the creation of music is what truly fills my heart.
