Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yexin Chai. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yexin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
“My passion for art started at a very young age, thanks to my grandfather who taught me how to draw dinosaurs. Those early moments ignited a creative spark within me that only grew stronger with time. As I grew older, my fascination with art led me to join an art academy, where I delved into extensive traditional art training. I found great joy in exploring various art forms and techniques, but it was the allure of romanticism oil painting that truly captured my heart.
One pivotal day, while my brother was engrossed in his traditional art, I stumbled upon the captivating world of digital art through websites like CGhub and Artstation. As I browsed through the works of talented CGI artists, I was awe-struck by the possibilities that digital art offered. Witnessing the seamless blend of imagination and technology, I knew in that moment that I wanted to pursue this path.
From that point on, my focus shifted towards combining my love for traditional art with the endless possibilities of digital art. I began experimenting, using digital tools to enhance and complement my traditional pieces. It opened up a whole new realm of creativity for me, allowing me to explore unique artistic expressions and push the boundaries of my imagination.
The decision to pursue this hybrid approach was a turning point in my artistic journey. I continued honing my skills in both traditional and digital art, and this fusion of techniques allowed me to create artworks that resonated with my vision. I found joy in the process of bringing together the rich textures of oil paintings with the versatility and dynamism of digital art.
Yexin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Being an avid enthusiast of movies, games, fashion, and art history, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in an academy of fine art, where I underwent comprehensive training in traditional art techniques. I have been working on illustration and concept art for a while. While initially using 3D tools to enhance my 2D paintings, I quickly became fascinated with exploring 3D techniques. Then I joined a master’s class and got a computer art degree. Combining my long-standing experience in drawing and concept art with my expertise in 3D, I have developed a versatile skill set that encompasses different stages of the production pipeline. In a recent group project, utilizing Unreal Engine 5 pipeline to shoot a short film, I served as the art director the team.
Most of my artwork that fuses historical themes, human history, and fantasy elements. With a touch of dark fashion and romanticism, each piece takes you on a journey through time and imagination, revealing a unique blend of the past and the fantastical. Discover historical figures in a new light as they embark on extraordinary adventures, all set against a backdrop of Gothic allure.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
First of all, from the government’s perspective, it is crucial to establish a reasonable review system and allow for adequate creative freedom. Managers should not impose certain ideologies to shape society’s aesthetics, as it can be detrimental to creators.
Secondly, substantial investment in the field of art education would be highly beneficial. A mature, effective, and advanced art education system serves as the foundation for a society’s creative vitality. The state of education, marred by corruption and incompetence, directly impacts the artistic potential and abilities of individuals. Thus, an art education system that embraces diverse aesthetics and nurtures students’ natural inclinations is of utmost importance.
Finally, from a social standpoint, the quality of art appreciators also influences the work of creators. At times, excessive intervention from media and capital can skew the public’s aesthetic sensibilities.
I hope this revision accurately reflects your intended message. Let me know if you need further assistance or if there’s anything else I can help you with!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative goal has always been centered around historical themes, partly because I want to use my art to make people fall in love with their own past cultures. Throughout history’s changes and political transitions, countless cultures have been trampled upon and destroyed, but they once bloomed with infinite charm. Through my works, I aspire to serve as a conduit for spreading beauty and cultural awareness, uncovering those fascinating cultures that have been forgotten by many and recreating them.
The way a nation appreciates its own traditional culture is vastly different from how other ethnicities appreciate their traditional culture. This cultural exchange will encourage the birth of more diverse and imaginative works in the field of art, making artistic creation more profound. My dream is to promote aesthetic education.
