We were lucky to catch up with Yewande Oke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yewande, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
When I initially created Yayafitness, I wanted to make an app where people from all over the world could have access to my dance fitness program. The first step was getting my business plan written and completed. Second, I found a company that already had a platform that matched my needs. They were able to help me build my app and get it on IOS and Android. Last but not least, I began to input all the content I had created over the years and now have a fully functioning fitness app called “Yayafitness”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been into fitness since I could remember, from weight class in high school to playing multiple sports. Fitness became a lifestyle and it was one I would keep till this day.
Came to America from Nigeria at a very young age and it’s normal to forget your language and some things you learned from back home but I was determined to keep my culture alive. I continued speaking my language, dancing our traditional dance and as I grew into my adult life, it became my main source of fitness. I realized, if I can see results and have this much fun getting healthy, why not teach others how to do the same.
Yayafitness was born from my passion to stay fit and help others find their fitness goals through Afrobeat Dance Fitness.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn high expectations. What I mean by that is always thinking that my business is and should blow up fast. I had to understand that everything starts from somewhere and mine has been growing for years but this new journey of creating an app isn’t going to be a fast-paced thing and I will have to build my clientele into the app.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Within my app, I have a text function where I can communicate, check-in, and help them with whatever they may need. It helps my clients say on top of their goals.
