We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful YESLA. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with YESLA below.
YESLA, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
When it comes to creative journeys and endeavors, I think most creatives like to think they wished they started earlier because you think about how much further you would be if you did. As I get older & am learning from life experiences, I am starting to feel that everything happens in the right time. I think if i would’ve started my journey earlier, I would’ve been further along younger and would maybe not be ready mentally for the changes/ challenges that would’ve occurred. So in a long way of answering this question, I do wish I started earlier but I think when I started this artist journey, happened when it was supposed to. I feel secure in that timing because now I have this particular drive. ambition, & mindset; I wouldn’t trade that for any other version.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is YESLA and I am an Alternative Rock Artist from Los Angeles, CA. I have had a passion for music for as long as I can remember. I entered this world knowing I wanted to sing and that’s exactly what I did. I started singing in school choirs as well as church choirs which is what also lead me to pick up the guitar. It was an instrument that I had an instant attraction and connection to. I was about 13 years old when I started playing the guitar. Since a young age, I liked to write poetry as well but it wasn’t until I was about 16 years old that I started to put melodies and music to those poems. If I had to pick something that sets me apart from others, it would be my message of being fearless. What I do through my music is connect people to their authentic selves and show them that it’s okay to take the path less traveled. My music is for the rebellious soul who is on the journey of self growth and discovery.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having a pure outlet to share my life experiences and lessons. It is pretty cool that I am able to use the good & the bad that I have endured in life and put it in an art form where it can reach people who can relate to the emotions/ story of a song. The connection to others through music is the best & most rewarding part.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
If I had to pick a mission that is driving my creative journey, it would be getting the message out there of being authentically you. We are living in a society right now that is pressuring everyone to look a certain way, act a certain way, & think a certain way. It is really BS & toxic. I want to encourage people to use their energy to grow to be the best versions of themselves through self love and self acceptance; Have a rebel heart and go against the grain. I want to create a safe space for everyone to flourish as they are and as they want to be. Being real is cool so be unapologetic about it.
