We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yesenia Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yesenia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I started my business officially January 2023, I had been having friends and family try my pops and let me try designs during the holiday season. I finally got the courage to post in a local party Facebook group that I could help them make fun treats for their party. I probably posted more than 20 times before I had someone message me back. I didn’t have a lot of samples to show them what I could do, so they really had to put a lot of faith into me. She messaged me to see if I could do some sport ball pops for her and she trusted me enough to place an order. I was so excited, finally a stranger had trusted me and I felt like I made the right decision to make pops. I felt like a superstar. Comes delivery day and she loved them. To this day she still orders from me even with my price increasing. I love to create fun pops for her family. I know I help make their day a bit more fun and special.
Yesenia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into cake pops because of a random reel that popped into my feed one night. I have always loved to bake and create treats for my family. I thought it was so cool that you could make anything into a cake pop. All I had known was the coffee shop pops and knew how much my toddlers loved them. I started making some for my family, my friends, and took an online course with an amazing pop artist. This was all in October/November. In December I did a mini Christmas design launch to see what I could create. In January 2023 that’s when I got licensed and started my business.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I take a lot of time creating, solving and working on a design and never back down from a challenge. I am upfront with a client if I haven’t made that design before but most trust me and I make sure I give them my best.
I am just so proud of how far I’ve gone. When I started I was hesitant this would be something people would be interested in, but I’ve had some amazing clients with amazing ideas that have loved my creations. I also started teaching at a local cake supply store so other creators can also make amazing pops. I love a design that gets me out of my comfort zone because I know it makes me better.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my audience honestly with the help of family and friends. They were my #1 cheerleaders, They reposted, shared, commented. I also promoted myself in a local party Facebook group and got a few followers from there. My advice for anyone that wants to grow is keep posting, ask friends and family to repost and share, The right people will find you and help you grow.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Lately it has been my website. Earlier this year I decided to finally built a site and I am an easy google search away. There’s so many people that go directly to Google and not a social media site. When I fist started it was mostly Facebook and Instagram, but the website has opened up my potential and capacity and has helped big organizations find me.
