We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yeniel Nieto. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yeniel below.
Yeniel, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always been surrounded by music my entire life. My dad showed me Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins at a very young age. My mom showed me bands like Red and Switchfoot very young in my life and I’ve loved them ever since. I would never take school seriously and cared more about wanting to make music and play shows in front of people I don’t even know. There was something about that with I fell in love with and interacting with other musicians in the San Antonio scene I get high off that energy!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a musician and songwriter from Lytle Texas a little small town 20 minutes away from San Antonio. I got into the music scene as soon as I finished high school in 2021 and my first ever show was at rockbox with my best friend Bryndon Carter who I am in a band with currently as Sky and The Machines. Ever since then we kinda had many evolvements trying to find who we are musically. I don’t think nothing sets me apart from others honestly. I don’t think I’m better than anyone else because that’s a terrible mindset to have for yourself. I play music by myself as Life is Beautiful and play some shows by myself with a looper pedal and a guitar and try my hardest to make sure everyone can relate and put on a good show with just one person. What I’m very proud of is there’s this one show I played with Bryndon, we played our debut Sky and The Machines show at the Mohawk in Austin and we were so thrilled and excited to play there since we saw one of our favorite bands there a couple months back and then we play where they did maybe not exactly the same stage but the environment if that makes sense. I want people to know that I am doing everything I can to make it out there as a musician and as a person and growing everyday and learning from my mistakes and always evolving as a musician.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
It’s just to keep playing shows and keep making music and hopefully to be a touring musician one day. I’ve always wanted to play venues like The Smell, The Teragram Ballroom, Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California. If I can play those places one day in my life I would be set and feel like I’ve done something. Even to play Aztec Theater in San Antonio. I know those are for like bands and artists with a bigger audience but it’s a dream I guess you can say. It’s mostly these venues I really wanna play around Austin and LA.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn to start over at one point and just go with my gut instinct. I was unhappy at some points in my life because I wasn’t happy musically doing what I was doing and was in a few bands before and had to learn to speak up and fight for myself. It affects me still to this day because actions have a consequence and I get scared but I learn to just keep trying and keep fighting for my craft.
