Yelena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

As one of New York City’s top facialists, I created Roezen, a truly unique skincare line formulated around a powerful ingredient that is 100% natural, highly moisturizing, and unquestionably luxurious: caviar. The collection’s centerpiece is the Roezen Beauty Mask, which gently but effectively purifies, firms and perfects the skin. It is highly effective on all skin types, even sensitive skin, balancing both dry/aging complexions and those that are oily.

Roezen was created by me. I’m abeauty practitioner from Ukraine who for over twenty years who worked and trained other estheticians at Bliss Spa’s flagship location in Soho and internationally for nearly 20 years. For Roezen, I have harnessed the power of caviar, blending it with specially chosen essential oils and sea salt for skincare products that delicate exfoliate, cleanse, and moisturize. They are rich in natural Omega-3s and other essential oils as well.

Roezen Beauty Mask is unlike any other mask on the market. Due to its high caviar content, it must be stored under refrigeration; to apply the mask, a teaspoon-sized amount of the product is rubbed in one’s hands, breaking the eggs and unleashing their natural oils, minerals, and vitamins. After massaging into the skin, the mask is simply rinsed off, leaving the complexion smooth, supple, and perfectly hydrated.

The Roezen Collection also includes a Eye Mask that similarly moisturizes and smooths the skin. It also helps lessen the appearance of fine lines, crows’ feet and wrinkles as well as dark spots.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

When we came to America from Ukraine , I got my license as a skin specialist and found my first job in a Russian-owned salon in Staten Island. I was trained to do everything – hair, nails, facials, waxing — you name it. I was paid $25 a day. I learned techniques and treatments from the Russian girls that they didn’t teach in beauty school, so it was worth it!
I didn’t speak English yet, but I managed to get my driver’s license. I bought a very old Oldsmobile, and I drove it across the Verrazano Bridge everyday to work – regardless of the weather.

One day, I was driving a couple of my co-workers home to Brooklyn. It was very windy and cold. The bridge was covered in ice and my car started to spin. I lost control and I was terrified. At that moment, I decided I was not going back to Staten Island.

When I got home that evening, I told my husband, I’m going to find a job in Manhattan and take the subway to work. He looked at me like I was crazy. He said, “How are you going to Manhattan, you don’t speak English.” While he was talking, I grabbed the Russian newspaper, looked through the job listings and circled one that said “Need Esthetician in Soho.” I called immediately and made an appointment to come for an interview the next day.”

I didn’t know even where Soho was, but that didn’t stop me. Something was driving me – and it wasn’t the old Oldsmobile.

When I got to the salon, a young girl with twin ponytails greeted me. She looked like a teen-ager, and I assumed she was a receptionist. We talked for a little while and then she asked me to give her a facial. So, I did. I noticed she had a whitehead, so I took an extractor and removed it. I must have startled her because she asked, “Why did you do that?” I answered: “Because you needed it!” And, then she said: “You’re hired. Can you start on Monday?”

I wasn’t sure how much money to ask for, so I took a piece of paper and wrote down a number. I never said if it was for a day or for a week, but she agreed to pay it. That’s how I got a job at the most famous salon in Manhattan “Let’s face it”in 1995, which eventually became Bliss. The young girl with ponytails was Marcia Kilgore, the Bliss founder who has also created several other very successful brands.
