We were lucky to catch up with Yebine Yabi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yebine, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My brother was my hero because he just had a way about him that made people feel important. He could walk into a room full of people and his charm followed him and people would want to know who he was and how they could work with him.
He believed in himself so much and never gave up on anything. Whenever there were difficulties, he would find a way around the situation and improve it. He was the business guru of our family, he had tenacity, confidence, and SWAG!
The key lesson I learned from my brother was “legacy”, I say that because he was always thinking of the future and what things would look like after we’ve long gone from this world. He always wanted to be known for something, which I admired the most about him. He didn’t just dream but he worked very hard through adversity, and long nights and he broke those barriers and made it his own.
My brother is no longer here but I carry all the lessons he taught me and his spirit is with me every day. I smile knowing that he influenced me to create Dope Woman of God (DWG) to leave something to inspire the next generation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Dope Woman of God (DWG) was created in the midst of the pandemic in 2020. A time when so much uncertainty was at an all-time high and everything stopped but God had other plans.
Dope Woman of God is a faith-based lifestyle apparel and accessories business that started as an online ministry now turned small business. When I first launch DWG, I was still reeling from my brother’s unexpected death and I desperately needed an outlet and a place to dump all of my thoughts and feelings to anyone that would listen but as time went on, everything changed.
Within the first six months, my account started to grow and I realized that when I poured my heart out about my faith in God despite all that has happened, God still worked it out for my good. I found that purpose is rooted in service and when you help others, you heal and beautiful things come from that.
After two years of pure ministry, God gave me a new assignment, which was faith-forward merch and stationary to remind others of His goodness and faithfulness. The DWG shop creates bold statement items that are set as a reminder and encouragement to keep faith in God and to give God everything.
I am most proud of the community I have built over the past three years, I am amazed by what God has been doing with DWG and I can’t wait to see what the next few years look like.
Dope Woman of God’s motto is “Pray, Believe, Watch God Work”, meaning that when you put God first in all you do and have faith in Him, you will see His hands in everything.
One thing about God, He always shows up for you!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I was able to build a reputation as Dope Woman of God by being confident in what my mission is. I never let anyone who was ahead of me or had more than me make me feel any less than. I have a not give up spirit and no matter what happens, I keep moving and I keep showing up to cultivate my business. Whether good days or bad days, I would still position myself to win despite the outcome.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I build my social media presence by being genuinely myself. I didn’t go there as someone else. I went with the intention of pouring my heart out and helping others. Dope Woman of God exists to inspire, motivate and encourage women to look to God and trust God even in hard times.
My advice to others would be to stay true to themselves and their goals. Social media isn’t about followers but rather a community. I would advise others to be genuine and be unapologetically themselves because their tribe or community would appreciate that very much.
Lastly, I would advise them that growth on social media does not happen overnight, and comparison is a thief of joy.
