We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yavin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yavin, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
This year I decided to make the jump to Los Angeles from Boston, which was originally a very scary idea, but ended up being entirely worth it. I sent my entire life in Massachusetts, and so though the thought of living somewhere different completely removed from the world I knew for so long could’ve been something that broke me but it ended up being a whole new fuel. I’ve been able to find myself in new ways and learn about my own capacity for change, and this new start could not have come at a better moment in my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Yavin, and I’m a musician! I make what I like to call whimsical pop music. I try to attack all of my creativity with an edge of cleverness and whit, while still making sure to center the human experience. As a fully independent artist, over the past few years I’ve had my share of wins – from taking part in AT&T’s 2022 pride campaign, being nominated for multiple Boston music awards and two New England Music Awards, performing for 3,500 people at Boston’s 2022 “Gay Bash’d” and racking up over 400,000 streams online.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As someone who was born & raised in Massachusetts, my ties to the Boston music scene are both incredibly formative and something that I hold very near & dear to my heart. But this year, I decided to pack everything up and move to Los Angeles in pursuit of new beginnings for my music career. To many people, this may be viewed as me giving up on my home city, but it’s quite the contrary. I’m so proud to be from Boston’s music scene and took away an inexplicable amount of knowledge and memories from there. One of my favorite phrases is that two things can be true at once – I can have the utmost faith in Boston as a rich and vibrant music scene, while also needing to embark on something different for the sake of starting new chapters in my life. I love Boston so incredibly much, and it’ll never not be home nor is it going anywhere. I’ll always have Boston in my corner as I’ll always be in the corner for those who’ve been a part of my journey and for those will be starting their journeys there after me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is easily the connections that you make from it. As an especially emotion-bearing musician I quite literally air all of my most personal thoughts out for everyone to hear, and for some people that may feel extreme but for me it’s been the thing that I’m most proud of and has been the thing that has led me to speaking to so many people from all over the place who have identified with my work. I feel so lucky to say that I’ve had a bunch of experiences where people have gone out of their way to seek me out online to message me about how much my work has spoken to them, and that feeling is something that is truly indescribable.
