We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yasir Abdulqader a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yasir, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
At TangoScrubs, we’ve taken a distinctive approach by merging practicality with modern aesthetics. Unlike traditional medical scrubs that prioritize function over form, our designs are crafted to provide both. As a physician, I’ve experienced firsthand the limitations of conventional medical wear—uninspiring and uncomfortable. Our mission at TangoScrubs is to revolutionize this by introducing scrubs that not only support healthcare professionals in their daily tasks but also uplift their spirits with stylish, vibrant designs. This dual focus on comfort and style addresses a significant gap in the market, empowering medical staff to feel good about how they look while performing at their best.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Yasir Abdulqader, the founder of TangoScrubs and a practicing physician based in Phoenix, AZ. With over two decades in the medical field, I’ve witnessed the evolution of healthcare needs and the slow adaptation of medical apparel to meet these changes. The idea for TangoScrubs came from my own struggles with finding medical wear that felt good to wear throughout long shifts without compromising on professional appearance. My role extends beyond designing; I am actively involved in every step of the production process, ensuring that each piece of apparel meets our high standards of quality and functionality.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Starting TangoScrubs was made possible through the support of like-minded individuals—my colleagues and friends in the healthcare sector who shared my vision for better medical apparel. Their belief in the importance of our mission provided the initial funding necessary to launch the brand. This community-driven approach not only helped us financially but also reinforced the idea that we were creating something that had real demand within the medical community.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Launching a startup is never without its challenges, and TangoScrubs was no exception. One of our early obstacles was finding the right fabric blend that could meet our criteria for comfort, durability, and style. After numerous trials and errors, and facing potential setbacks with suppliers, we finally developed a proprietary fabric blend that met all our specifications. This perseverance in the face of adversity has defined our journey—turning each challenge into an opportunity to innovate further.
