We were lucky to catch up with Yash Naran recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yash, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I love being a creative human being. It makes something small seem so grandeur. I am in the transition from juggling working 40 hours a week and making time for creative endeavors and bookings. I know I have the talent and drive to get there but taking that leap can seem scary. I know a regular job for the rest of my life isn’t something I could be happy doing. If I was solely working for someone else it wouldn’t feed my soul.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Yash Kumar Naran. I’ve been involved in some sort of arts since I was a child. I was about 13 when thing kicked into gear. I started dancing with a dance team, and from there began working for different projects all over the world. Touring with companies and working brands and artists I dreamed of. I graduated college at 23 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting my true passion. I knew it was in my blood and it was my time to make the big move. Honestly, first couple of years I was just trying to survive. I say I was getting my roots solid so I could grow higher and bigger, and it took a while but I did. It wasn’t until the pandemic where I knew I had to focus on my goals and start hustling just a little more. I was submitting and still submitting daily. I went from focusing on dancing and acting to becoming a model for brands and seeing my face on buildings. Now I still have my 9-5 job and I’m working on fully being a creative artist but each day I get closer and closer to fulfilling my purpose.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s about emotions for me. What emotions can I get out of someone. It can be as simple as happiness. How can I entertain someone for just a short while? It’s so hard to be human sometimes so if we can create an escape for someone and make them feel something I know did my job. I love the visual medium. Finding creative and unique ways of subverting expectations. So if my intention is to scare someone or make someone emotional, when I get those comments back about how it affected them whew that is what it’s all about. I don’t get crazy views and I don’t have big budgets but by using pure intention and anticipating behaviors I can at least try and create something that allows escape.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I grew up watching Indian movies. I learned how to dance from literally copying the dance moves and remembering choreography. So getting older you see TV and movies and you don’t always see people that look like you. And I know we are doing great strides for representation. But I want to see people like me in horror movies or musicals. Where being indian or asian is just about who the character is not have anything to do with the tv or movie. I strive for roles or opportunities that have nothing to do with race and more about who I am as a person.
