SubscribeWe’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yared Berhane. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yared below.
Hi Yared, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My brother Yared is the second youngest in a family of seven, three brothers and four sisters, from loving parents, our late mother Workenesh Hailemichael and late father Tekleab
Berhane. A year after our parents migrated us from our homeland Eritrea, to keep us safe from the liberation civil war Eritrea from Ethiopia, Yared was born in Sudan on January 3rd 1980,
with an amazing childhood upbringing, he was the most loved talented and gifted kid in the family, neighbors, and relatives. Playing with the neighborhood kids, there was one thing that is
obvious about Yared to anyone who paid any attention, that is his vision and creativity. Even though, raised in a loving and caring family and community, as a child Yared wasn’t privileged to buy any toy that he desired, so he had to make his own. He built cars, trucks out
of wires for framing, and tin cans for the body shape, used old flip-flops for tires, and old batteries and flashlight bulb for headlights. Many other kids in the neighborhood also build their own, but in comparison, Yared’s stood out for its details, accuracies, functionality and
looking almost replica of the original. Christmas was another time when Yared’s creativity shined. The nativity seen that he made from clay was sometimes even better than what the
older boys in the neighborhood made and every year they were proudly displayed under Christmas tree, everyone who visited marveled to know a seven-year-old kid was responsible of
such a ceramic work.
My best memory, ninth grade art class assignment, drawing picture of a
family member; as I was drawing Mom’s profile picture, I see to my side Yared, an
impressionable young kid also drawing. It was very fascinating to see, when completed his
version was much better outcome compared to mine. Since then I was very impressed of his
talent. All these years, for so many people it was Yared, just as any other kid playing, but later on it was apparent at least to us, his family, that he was displaying his god given talent.
When we came to America in the early 1990’s our parent’s main desire was to raise us in a free society,
free from political/religious persecution and have the opportunity reach our
full potential. At a young age, facing all the challenges that come with leaving everything that you know and coming to a new world, Yared followed his inner intuition and was able to take
advantage of every opportunity that came his way and propelled him to become the professional photographer he is today. Yard’s first move was in middle school, Encina High School when he enrolled in (E.B.S) Encina Broadcasting S., as he love recording videos and editing the school Broadcast. That class unlocked his inner passion for photography/videography the motivation to save money and buy his first Nikon film camera, and with the basic skill set and confidence that he needed to begin his young career
taking pictures at school sport events, family and friends birthday/graduation parties, and Eritrean community events, ever since a camera never left his side. While attending American
River College, art class, four of Yared’s canvas painting were selected for viewing at the school
gallery for showing, as his older brother I was very proud to see attendees admiring his artwork.
Not too long after that, I was very please to witness my younger brother’s artwork being Public displayed at Woodland Community College Art Gallery, capturing the attention of so many
viewers attention. As an older brother, to see my younger brother to go from that creative young kid, given the educational opportunity that he received, to further his god given talent,
work hard and become the artist he is today is very fulfilling and gratifying.
For our parents, regardless of all their troubles and sacrifices, doing whatever they have to do just to simply give us the opportunity to become the best we could, I am very much
assured they are very proud of Yared for not only meeting but surpassing their expectation. He
is a committed husband married to his beautiful wife Berikti, father of two six month old
adorable twins, Mathew and Abigale, and a professional photographer with multiple publication on a very reputable magazine such as Éclair and many others.

Yared, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Greetings, My name is Yared Berhane, I am a blessed father of two beautiful twins 7 month old and look forward to enjoying my journey with them and my gorgeous beautiful queen Birkti. Aside from that, I am a licensed and professional photographer of “Berhane Wedi-Irie Photography” at Elk Grove about five years as of April. As a photographer, I am versatile, My Main focus as photographer, is portrait, Headshot, Fashion and Beauty, and events such as, Runway, red carpet photo-shoot and etc…
– Event thought, I am a licensed photographer for about five years. My love and passion for photography started at the age of 12 years old.. For many years people I have known since the early then have supported and encouraged me to be a professional photographer and to go and attend college as a photography major, but I have never really Consider Photography to be make it a business at that time because I feared to fail but at those days I wasn’t ready to Approach photography as a business at all and it never crossed my mind.
– In 2018 I decided to approach photography as a full time business and I made my decision to doing so, but before pushing forward to making it as Concrete solid decision, I did have to bringing the idea with my fiancé and family to see what they think of my plan to start photography as a full time business. My Fiancé and family did support my decision and said you were born for this and that I do have the talent at capturing great photos plus my creativity and artistic vision it’s time that you you approach your god giving gift and they give me their blessings.
– I started to make the decision and to the steps of being a licensed professional photographer by 2018. Although, I am creative, artistic and passionate photographer, I realized the difference between Hobbyist/passionate photographer and a professional business photographer which it truly do differ. Being a professional photographer was so much different and really difficult. For example, knowing and understand the business aspect. Such as, being organized, having contracts, waivers and being skillful with having quality work. Understand the business rather then only being creative. Learning the language of business. Such as, knowing how to pitch a sale. For example, a bundle of three with different pricing and each bundle has an upgrade from one another to purchase.
.
I faced many Obstacles during my journey as a professional photographer. First obstacle was failure (yes) I failed many times but that makes stronger and teaches you where are your weaknesses and you will develop on it. Second obstacles of having photography as your full time job it’s really expensive to buying all the gears, equipments such as, lighting, backdrops, and all props and accessories that you need for your business. Other obstacles I faced was in 2020 when the COVID pandemic hit.
I have face many obstacles specially the toughest was the passing of mother from pancreatic cancer. Which I put my journey of my photography business on hold and aside because I needed to mourn the passing of my mother. The strong Eritrean mother that walked many long miles from one country to a near by country Sudan to save her children from the Ethiopian and Eritrean war the woman who brought me and my siblings to this world and the USA for us to have better opportunities to be worthy it was painful for me to recover from that painful experience of her passing she was our family glue and I needed time and strengths to recover again. Mental health is key to have time for yourself to heal.
.
As a photographer, I do volunteer my time to be a photographer for communities events such as, Paint Sacramento Pink Community Survivors raising funds for Testing & Treatment for local Breast Cancer Patients. 100% of all donations stay in Greater Sacramento, Lupus awareness community called “L for Lupus.” I volunteer my service for free and for BENEFITTING THE SACRAMENTO CHILDREN’S HOME and a Halloween Harvest block party for family and kids to attend helping the community gathering.
By 2021, I got published in magazine, like eclair magazine, Selin magazine and.etc, and plus I got invited to Elk Grove, Ca, to coordinate and organize African fashion show for the community of Elk Grove City multicultural festival in August 2022 to show the community the beauty of cultures and cultural dance plus music and traditional. After that I coordinated African fashion show in November 2022, and got published again in multiple magazines plus articles interviews publication and biography magazine publication by eclair and SDVoyager.
Recently in February, 2023 I was invited to be a red carpet photographer for All Hiphop Pre-Grammy celebration. Plus many amazing events, such as valentines experience, Egyptian experience event coordinated by DMR-Production and decor by JQ Events and etc…
Plus more celebrities red carpets which I am grateful to have all those opportunities of red carpet and magazines publication and articles interview publication it means so much to me and the work I put in to have all those doors open. In recent days and month I did celebrities red carpet shoot in Hollywood which my dream is to work with big industries and looking to grow and be invited as a photographer for Betaward red carpet photographer, for Paramont red carpet, and for Gala vogue celebrities red carpet skies the limit.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
In life the number one resource that you need is you. Everything comes from you to stay focused and be mentally strong and have a vision to where you would like to be in couples years from now because if you have a goal and you set a plan for your passion and business you could create as a creative artist all you need is to believe in you and to not be discouraged nor let people discouraged you from what you believe in and your goals trust me in the beginning it’s not going to be easy people will make you feel as you aren’t worth it or good enough that is why I said to be mentally strong and be Dedicated and stay consistent with what you believe in no matter what others have to say. After building of what I mentioned any resources you use as a creative will be useful not useless.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I as a person/individual do love to spend any of my free time to help out my community with anything from creative festivals, health and cancer awareness. Mental health awareness and any human kindness in a regular day. “Rather then judging and putting down each other, let’s help and uplift each other.”
