We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yani Sun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yani below.
Yani, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I believe that I have chosen the best time to start my creative career. I was a big fan of pop music and music videos when I was a teenager. It inspired me to want to be part of a music video team. I’m lucky to have my parents who always support me in pursuing my passion, so I started to learn a mix of digital arts during college. By exploring visual design with new media forms in 2013 with a focus on creative brand identity, UI&UX design, and immersive interactive installations, I developed a passion for motion graphics and animation. So I moved to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts to pursue my MFA degree. After I graduated, I joined a marketing agency and worked as a motion designer in this field. I wouldn’t change anything. Everything started at the perfect time.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Yani Sun, a Motion designer and Animator based in New York. I specialize in combining dynamic visual elements and color balance with a contemporary and lively style. The areas of my expertise include 2D&3D motion design, animation, graphic design, illustration, and UI design. My work now focuses on creating 2D motion achieving a smooth visual feeling, and helping brands promote their concepts and product to clients. I’m still exploring this field and working with brands in various industries, including fashion & beauty, emerging tech, and food & beverage.
Many motion designers want to find their style, but I keep telling myself that designers should be able to adapt to different types of work at first, and the personal style develops over time and with work experience. So I love experimenting with different styles and visual.
When not designing or animating, I love live music and exploring cities and museums. It always inspires me.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Before I studied at the School of Visual Arts, I already found my passion was motion and animation, but I was wondering if there were other platforms to see more motion works besides Behance and Youtube, Until I found Motionographer (https://motionographer.com/). It’s a perfect platform that shares inspiring work and important news for the motion design, animation, and visual effects communities. Moreover, I think it is very efficient for searching for the news in the motion field. Besides that, Filmfreeway (https://filmfreeway.com/festivals) is a platform for filmmakers to search for and submit their works to film festivals worldwide. Join the festival or competition is an excellent opportunity for designers to expand their network and share work with more audiences. In addition, it’s super fun chatting and making friends with other designers via the film festival!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I enjoy doing motion because It’s another language for me to convey stories and allows me to communicate emotions with others. I can express myself via visuals, and it makes me calm. It’s similar to music, the visual is no boundary between the country or language. Everyone can be the audience. When I hear my work lifts people up and encourages them to think, I am genuinely proud of my career, which keeps me wanting to create more work. I also enjoy working with many talented people as a team, and everyone is inspiring.
