We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yangzom Gama a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yangzom, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My journey as a graphic designer has always been rooted in understanding the interplay
between visual expression, cultural identity, and emerging technologies. Having grown up
on the Tibetan Plateau, I was immersed in an environment rich with natural beauty, ethnic
traditions, and a visual language deeply connected to place. Over time, I realized that these
early experiences formed the basis of my aesthetic sensibilities—an inclination toward
organic shapes, vibrant hues, and intricate patterns that carry both personal and cultural
significance. This foundation continues to guide my practice as I strive to create work that
is both visually compelling and intellectually engaging.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a graphic designer from the Tibetan Plateau who discovered my purpose in bringing happiness through visual communication. I view design as a universal language—expressing energy, emotion, and storytelling through organic graphics, typography, and printing techniques. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of art forms, I am influenced not only by the rich cultural heritage of my homeland but also by the creative impulses found in records, books, and the vibrant details of everyday life. This eclectic mix fuels my creative vision, leading me to balance playful creativity with refined sophistication in all my work.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I don’t have one specific goal or mission that defines my creative journey. Instead, what drives me is my genuine love for design, art, and everything beautiful. Every day, I’m inspired by the creative process—experimenting with different media. I find joy in the endless possibilities of visual communication, and that passion naturally draws me forward. For me, it’s not about chasing a particular destination; rather, it’s the continual discovery and expression of new ideas that motivates me. In essence, my journey is defined by a commitment to keep creating, immersing myself in the beauty of the creative process, and letting my genuine love for design guide me every step of the way.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One key lesson I’ve had to unlearn is the idea that design should follow set standards. I believe growth is all about unlearning. Growing up, I was constantly taught that everything—from academic scores to dress codes—had to adhere to strict standards. Even though I never fully agreed with this, I gradually realized that it was limiting my creative expression. Recognizing this made me understand the importance of creative freedom. Unlearning these constraints has been crucial for me; it encouraged me to boldly experiment with different forms of creation, freely use colors, and play with ideas like a child without overthinking. This shift has allowed me to embrace a more authentic and expressive approach to design.
