Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yamilet Molina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yamilet, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I decided to create YM Counseling Services because I wanted to build a space where individuals and athletes could feel safe and supported in addressing body image issues, eating disorders, performance anxiety, and trauma. I take pride in this practice being LGBTQ+ affirming, size inclusive, and anti oppression focused.
The beginning was filled with learning curves, particularly in trusting myself and having confidence in my vision. I knew I wanted to create a space for support, but taking that leap involved more than just setting up an office. I had to work through self-doubt, questioning if my expertise and passion were enough to build a successful practice. Believing in the value of what I was offering was a daily challenge, but it was essential to push through the uncertainty. I had to continually remind myself of the impact I aimed to make and the positive changes I hoped to facilitate.
For any counselor considering starting their own practice, my advice would be to trust yourself and your vision. Surround yourself with supportive people, seek guidance from those who’ve been there, and remember that building a practice takes time, patience, and resilience. Keep the focus on why you started in the first place—helping others.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely, I would choose the same profession and specialty again. My journey into therapy and sports counseling has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve found profound fulfillment in helping individuals and athletes navigate their challenges.
The ability to support clients in achieving their goals and improving their well-being has reinforced my passion for this field. Every step, from the initial challenges to the successes, has strengthened my commitment to this work. So yes, given the chance, I would choose this path again without hesitation.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Beyond training and knowledge, what I believe is most crucial for succeeding in this field is empathy and a genuine connection with clients. Building trust and understanding each client’s unique experiences and perspectives allows for a more impactful and supportive therapeutic relationship.
