We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yamil Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yamil, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Education through freedom of expression in music.
Thoughts and feelings don’t always have a correct way to be articulated in speech or writing. Opening the world to expression in the arts is a fundamental belief that I’ve held as a native son of Puerto Rico and raised by all the cultures and flavors of Florida.
This is what brought me to the Rave culture and many of the art and music scenes here in our own backyard. Once you feel your heartbeat with 50,000 other human beings, you see things a little differently.
For me being on this side of the journey now, the mission is pretty clear. I’m here to be a beacon and hold the torch for dancefloors where everyone can come and be celebrated and have the liberty to express themselves as they wish. This leads in to teaching and sharing music and culture as well.

Yamil, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a local DJ for the past 15+ years. I started going to concerts, festivals and clubs early and knew that I wanted to be a part of the culture immediately!
I bought gear, downloaded all sorts of music and software. I drove everyone crazy! At some point in my mid 20’s I had enough and made a choice to go to college. Not too long after that I found myself opening for Kristian Nairn!
When I’m not preparing for nights where I spin, I’m cultivating my brand called “Lurkerz Lair”. I developed this for content creation to educate on various topics ( streaming, long form discussions, music production and sound design, etc. )
We have helped many voiceless people find a way to express themselves in new ways and keep a focus on their dreams. Sometimes you just need the right room to appreciate YOUR sounds!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Don’t limit yourself to anyone software or hardware!
Someone needs to hear your song, see your art, or at the very least, hear your message. By any means necessary.
For the longest time I thought that certain programs or gear was the key to being “good”. If you’re reading this and want to make music, please don’t limit yourself to just one piece of equipment or DAW.
Music, just like painting on a canvas, requires a brush. It doesn’t matter which one you use. Use it if it’s free. Use it if no one before you could. Don’t let any dinosaur dictate how you should make or sound when they’ve never been to your future.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Truthfully? I think we are at our best as a society when we meet on the dancefloor. We glow our brightest when we can be seen and heard.
That in mind, it’s why I love bringing sounds to the dark or knowledge to those that want to share themselves artistically as well!
We all deserve a place to be ourselves and cultivate our communities. I want to do my part to make sure we all have a safe space to share sounds and stories.
