We were lucky to catch up with Yait Jara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yait, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is a controversial word; I can look at another person and think that they are successful, and most likely, that person will not see themselves the same way because they have higher standards or goals to reach. In my opinion, the first step to success is to believe you can do anything you want. Also, you need to find out your passion, and if you are good at it, because let’s be honest, we are not good at everything even if we love it. I like to sing because I can discharge my emotions through that, but my voice it’s terrible, so I would never imagine I could make money out of being a singer. That said, we need to be honest with ourselves and not be unrealistic, because that would only lead to failure and disappointment. Once that is sorted out, we need to think outside the box and leave out the standards that society has imposed on us for thousands of years. Especially for us women; because there is a long list of how we should behave and what we shouldn’t do. Most importantly, we need to be willing to work hard, while other people work Monday to Friday , 9:00am-5:00 pm; we will be working 24/7, even if we aren’t decorating a party, which is what people see; we are thinking about what we can do better, how to do it, designing, ordering products, finding new vendors, posting on social media, fixing the website, working to incorporate new things to the business, taking classes, and a long etcetera. And that’s the more challenging part because it’s exhausting, and to keep it up for a long time it’s the harder thing I have ever accomplished; it does not matter if you gave birth, if your child is sick, if you break up with your husband, if your father died, you need to keep going even when you feel you can’t. That’s the road to be successful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Yait Jara; I was born and raised in Cuba and moved to Spain when I was 19. I didn’t find “my place” there, so I moved to the USA in 2014; it has been a long and arduous journey; I resided in Tampa for almost seven years, I got my Paralegal degree, and I was working at a law office with the most fabulous people. I decided to move to Jacksonville when I was expecting my daughter. I always had a passion for decoration, and I used to plan and decorate all of my friends’ birthdays and company events. When my baby girl was born, I officially founded Events Decor Jax; we provide all types of decoration for any event: gender reveals, baby showers, kids’ and adults’ birthdays, quinceaneras, sweet 16, receptions, weddings, etc. I realize how hard it can be for many people to plan an event and even more challenging to decorate, so we take that burden off our clients; we offer event planning and decoration. We customized all the parties; my brother has been an essential key to success in my business since he took the woodworking position because now we offer many more backdrops and props to upgrade the party. Also, we are introducing bounce houses, ball pits, and soft play. Many people need those items not just for kids’ parties but for adults as well, it’s super fun, and it gives the event an extra glamorous and exciting touch.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
A good reputation is hard to gain and easy to lose. I consider myself new to this business since I have only been working as a decorator for one year and some months, but my business philosophy has always been; that no matter what happens, I cannot let my client down. Like any other human, we go through things that make us want to stay in bed for days, but this is not a 9-5 job where you can call out sick because if you do, your client will not have their party decorated. Even if you give them a full refund of their money, that person will never call you again and will never refer you to someone else; they can give you a bad review or talk wrong about your business. I think that business ethics is one of the most essential keys to building a good reputation.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
It’s been Social Media; nowadays, Instagram and Facebook are the keys to growing any business. I am also on Google and Yelp, and I have my website. My favorite way of being found is word of mouth, where I get a lot of new clients recommended by clients I have had in the past. I even have some regular clients already, and they call me every time they celebrate anything. I am grateful for all of them. It does not matter how they found me; I always try my best to make them happy.
