Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yahnnica Tate. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Yahnnica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Growing up, my grades were never anything to brag about, but when it came to subjects that truly sparked my interest and real-life experiences, I was always an overachiever. Writing and building relationships have always been my passions, and I’ve managed to turn those interests into a fulfilling career.
I believe our education system could improve by exposing students to the wide range of career opportunities available to them. Many students are unaware of the diverse professions they could pursue simply because they’ve never been introduced to them. One way to change this is by integrating internships into high school curriculum. During high school I held an internship at a local radio station in return for academic credits and while at Hampton University, I completed five PR internships. Those hands-on experiences were invaluable in shaping my career path.
In addition to career preparation, I think some courses should be tailored to equip students with skills for everyday life. Classes on financial literacy, covering budgeting, taxes, and money management, should be standard. Practical skills like changing a tire, performing basic car maintenance, or learning effective cleaning and organization techniques would also better prepare students for adulthood.
Ultimately, we should be providing students with essential life skills while also fueling their creativity. Many young people have talents and passions but may not realize they can turn them into a career. By offering real-world experiences and a more relevant education, we can help students discover and pursue fulfilling paths.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up in Seattle, I was always drawn to the power of storytelling and how a narrative could captivate an audience, shift perspectives, and create lasting connections. That passion led me to a career in Public Relations and Brand Strategy, where I’ve spent years helping brands and talent find their voice and tell their stories in meaningful ways. Now based in New York, my work has taken me across industries from television, film, music, technology, and more.
As a true Pacific Northwest girl, I’ve always been in love with the outdoors. I’ve been a skier since I was 4, and my first job was as a ski instructor, an experience that was both a personal and bonding experience with my dad. I love writing, hiking, and any opportunity to explore nature. My dream is to roadtrip across the US and other countries, experiencing new cultures while staying true to my roots in adventure and exploration.
I contribute my hunger for success to my faith in God and the unwavering support of my family. When I was 18 and moved 3,000 miles away for school, I have always felt foundationally prepared for life’s challenges. My mentality has always been fearless and to fully trust in my plan A and plan B was more like plan A.2.
I began exploring the field of PR while attending Hampton University. Some of my earliest career-defining moments range from working the red carpet premiere of FRUITVALE STATION to playing a role in Nicki Minaj’s MYX Fusions Moscato campaign during a college internship. Later, I had the opportunity to bring MOONLIGHT to HBCU campuses, helping the Oscar-winning film connect with young, diverse audiences in a way that felt personal and profound.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked with industry giants like Paramount to rollout binge-worthy shows and Amazon launching Prime Day. What I hear most from those I’ve worked with is an appreciation to blend strategy with passion to create impactful, intentional campaigns. For me, PR is about more than securing top-tier press but fostering genuine relationships and ensuring every strategy feels authentic and understood. My approach is rooted in authenticity, transparency, and collaboration, always aiming to forge lasting connections that extend beyond the moment.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience is a quality that’s constantly tested in my life, but I never fold easily when faced with a challenge or a “no.” I would consider pivoting as one of my greatest strengths. To me, resilience is a mental challenge that requires unwavering trust in your own capabilities. One of my favorite tattoos is a mountain and the word “faith” on my feet because I truly believe that my faith can move mountains.
As a skier, I’m reminded of this lesson often. Growing up, my dad would take me to the top of the mountain, which required two ski lifts to get to. I’ve always had a fear of heights, but there’s something about the beauty of the mountains and the crisp, clean air that makes it worth it. Before tackling the slope, I’d have to talk myself into it because taking the chair lift back down is an ultimate no-no in the ski community.
On a double black diamond run, you’re faced with steep inclines, narrow paths, and bumpy terrain. But I always knew that my dad was waiting at the bottom of the slope coaching me through every pivot. His guidance, even from a distance, became symbolic of how I approach life’s challenges. Whether it’s a campaign strategy or a challenge life throws my way, I’ve learned to mentally prepare to switch gears and follow through with my commitments.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that building a strong reputation within my market comes down to being kind, authentic, and a strong collaborator. I always strive to present myself as approachable and transparent, valuing genuine, personal connections with everyone I interact with. What sets me apart is my commitment to listening, understanding, and tailoring strategies that feel true to the people and brands I work with. I focus on cultivating relationships that go beyond just professional ties because I value relationships. This mindset has been poured into me by my mom and has not only helped me build trust within my industry but also ensured that the work I produce is always rooted in genuine intention, integrity, and mutual respect.
