Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Xylo Aria. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Xylo, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started off as a singer songwriter and unfortunately didn’t have great experiences with the male producers that I was working with. As a young female artists you can often get into unpleasant power struggles with producers and I eventually got tired of this and decided I wanted to take control of this situation and be able to release music without dealing with these issues.
I eventually realized that producing my own music was the only option moving forward and got started. This journey felt really lonely and I often felt like the odd person out in production workshops and forums, but when I eventually started to release my self(produced music it was an absolute game changer. I wanted to tell every woman that she could do this too if she wanted to!
I then started to talk to other female artists and it was really unfortunate that almost all of them had similar experiences to me when it came to working with other producers. At this moment I realised the importance of a safe teaching platform that was focused on empowering more women in the music production space.
I didn’t see anyone doing this in the way that I would have loved to see so almost felt it was my responsibility to start the platform which is what MPW has become today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I know how lonely and isolating it can feel as a female artist who is wanting to learn to produce music while not knowing where to start, what equipment is needed, and where to find support. So at MPW we run courses and workshops that are designed to give artists everything they need to build the skills to be able to produce and mix their own music while also understanding some basics of the music business and industry.
We run many free events throughout the year but our flagship program is a one year program called Master Your Music. Through this program our team dedicates themselves to provide in all the teaching resources with our experienced teachers and the community that our students need to succeed in producing and releasing their music.
We also have a podcast which has now surpassed a hundred episodes that has a wealth of information on music production and the music industry.
We are most proud of the feedback that we get from our students mainly around the significant boost in confidence after working with us for a year, which they have mentioned has been priceless in all areas of their life!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the process of saving money by doing things myself.
Although this can seem like a good idea especially when you may be cash poor when you are starting your business, it is not a good long-term strategy. You need to prioritise your time by doing the things that are aligned with your strengths and delegating the things that can be done better by others, or at least unlock the best use of your time.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I initially started my business I used to think that perhaps people wouldn’t want to learn from me because I wasn’t an award-winning music producer with an extensive amount of experience. I wonder now if that was actually a strength and made our brand more approachable because I had been in the shoes of our students in the not too distance past and as a result understood their struggles perhaps better than someone who had been an industry professional for a number of years.
