Today we’d like to introduce you to Xuezhu Jenny Wang.
Hi Xuezhu Jenny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
A lot of my past work has been social media-heavy. I had a brief content creator career on the Chinese streaming platform Bilibili, posting visual analysis and art history videos. That was when I realized how important it is to bridge the gap between fine arts and popular culture via digestible content. Since starting IMPULSE Magazine in 2024, I have focused on trying to understand how people consume content nowadays. Our editorial work happens both on Instagram and on our website.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not been the easiest. It was and still is hard to secure funding, and I’m constantly finding out about new things to learn along the way. Fortunately I have an amazing team, with creative directors Meinzer and Victoria Reshetnikov, as well as senior editor Jubilee Park. Whenever there are bumps along the road, we always discuss, brainstorm, and come up with creative solutions or honest opinions.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about IMPULSE Magazine?
IMPULSE Magazine is an arts and culture magazine headquartered in New York. We publish reviews of modern and contemporary art, conduct artist interviews, and hold exhibitions featuring international artists. IMPULSE’s editorial team is led by women, and we are deeply passionate about discussing art in the context of social activism, be it related to gender rights, immigrant rights, and reproductive rights.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Before my mom started her own business, she worked an office job (accounting) and would occasionally take me to the office. I remember being fascinated by computers, stationeries, and all the charts and just couldn’t wait to grow up and start working. I still look back fondly and think about how my concept of work and labor was so naive at the time, which is really cute.
