We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Xiyuan Wang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Xiyuan below.
Alright, Xiyuan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Ideas are always coming from our daily lives. Those talented and creative people around us often have a ten times stronger sensation than others. When I was a kid, my parents called me “sensitive,” I learned that sensitivity became helpful in creative work as I grew up. For instance, clients or art directors often provide a direction for designers to work on. While they picture what they want, I need to quickly go through the library in my head that I built daily by observing people and surroundings to find out possible choices for the design direction. On the contrary, if I rarely feel anything from my daily life, I might have difficulty developing good concepts for the clients.

Xiyuan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am currently a design intern in an advertisement agency while finishing my study of motion media design at Savannah College of Art and Design. As a kid, I didn’t feel good at anything but drawing. And my mom is very supportive of me pursuing things that I like. So I went to art school for college. I never doubt if I should keep pursuing my career in the creative field. In the design/art industry, there is never a lack of skilled people for drawing or software techniques, which means many people can work in a technical role. But each great project has a group of amazing directors and producers working on creating concepts and ensuring they come out well. This is where I feel like I can jump in. I love coming out with crazy ideas and collaborating with different talents; I always keep an eye on what’s happening around the world and build friendly relationships with coworkers.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As an Asian kid, I was taught to become a modest person my whole life, which made me consider arguing with others horribly. I was scared to fight for myself because I feared arguing with someone. Because I think any arguments will lead to a fight. However, the real world is very aggressive and competitive. As an artist/designers, we need to promote ourselves and defend our art in front of inappropriate judgments. Sometimes, we must speak out to let people know we are confident about our concepts or outcome while giving sufficient reasons if we feel like we are doing the right thing. And Most of the time, it won’t lead to a fight because human is very reasonable, and they know we are just doing our jobs.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
People are the most helpful resources. Most of the ideas came from conversations and interactions between people. And I was too shy to introduce myself and my work to others which resulted in losing many job and collaboration opportunities in the past.
