We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Xinting Yu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Xinting below.
Xinting , appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
I am a graduate student majoring in graphic design. I believe that the trend in our industry involves the expansion of designers’ roles. Designers are no longer solely concerned with the details of design, aesthetics, and typography. Instead, greater expectations are placed on designers, such as incorporating storytelling. Branding is one of the main tasks for graphic designers and is an area where the skill of storytelling is particularly crucial. Graphic designers need to understand the client’s mission and market positioning to create a comprehensive visual system that effectively communicates these values. This involves designing a cohesive set of visuals that assists the client in conveying their core beliefs.
I believe this trend has made the work of graphic designers more enriching while also boosting their competitiveness. After all, the ongoing development of artificial intelligence is bound to impact traditional design work to some extent. It also makes graphic design a more delicate and humane industry.
Xinting , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a graduate graphic design student at ArtCenter. Coming from an arts and literature background, I felt a bit lost about my career direction after college. I began contemplating a profession that would allow me to incorporate storytelling into aesthetics, and graphic design emerged as my answer.
Upon entering ArtCenter, I discovered my design interest in various courses, particularly in editorial design. My passion for reading led me to become fascinated with the weight of books and the scent of paper. Editorial design deepened my understanding of the magic behind books. For instance, the whitespace in books is the thoughtful result of designers, enhancing the reader’s experience. Editorial design is like a design feast, and even page numbers are a manifestation of design.
Currently, I am working on my thesis project, which has made me realize my boundless enthusiasm for children’s design. I believe this sets me apart from other designers. When creating designs for children, I go beyond crafting visually appealing and colorful designs. I focus on how my designs can actively help children. To achieve this goal, I interviewed different people, continually enriching my understanding of children’s design. Simultaneously, I delved into books on child psychology, attempting to comprehend children’s needs from a scientific perspective.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Before entering the field of graphic design, I always aspired to make my designs contribute to societal progress, striving to convey positive messages to people. In the past two years, I have discovered a strong interest in children’s design and children’s picture books. Therefore, my current goal is to work in a field related to children’s design/picture books.
I hope to make graphic design a tool that aids children in self-discovery. Simultaneously, I aspire to publish picture books of my own. I wish for my picture books to bring smiles to children’s faces.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing the work of other artists. Whenever surrounded by artistic creations, I feel a profound sense of happiness and gratitude that I can be part of such a creative industry. Admittedly, the design process can be quite challenging, often involving significant time and effort without guaranteed satisfaction. However, once a design takes shape, that moment makes me appreciate being a designer. The finalized design is like the crystallization of my creativity, providing an endless sense of accomplishment and allowing me to feel my self-worth.
