We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Xinola a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Xinola, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

I regret not seizing control of the creative process sooner in my career. Back then, it was rare to see women in anything other than singing roles within the music industry. As a result, I struggled to connect with the idea of being a producer or an instrumentalist. However, today, the landscape has changed significantly, presenting countless opportunities and advanced technology that empowers individuals with varying skill levels to take charge of their music production. This newfound accessibility allows me to assert more authority, whether it’s leading a band or spearheading a project.

Xinola, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am an artist who brings a unique blend of music styles to the table. What sets me apart is my ability to merge Dominican rhythms and Latin rhythms into post-punk rock and surf rock genres. My music is a reflection of the beautiful intersection between nature and city life, as well as the fusion of American and Latina cultures, Spanish and English languages, and the dynamics between femininity and masculinity.

As an artist, I strive to create a body-positive and inclusive space for all. I embrace my identity as a mother, a feminist, and an ally. Through my music, I aim to challenge societal norms, spark important conversations, and empower listeners to embrace their true selves.

The products I offer include original compositions, performances, and recordings that showcase this unique fusion of genres. I solve the problem of providing fresh and innovative sounds that break away from traditional musical boundaries. By incorporating diverse cultural influences, I offer a refreshing perspective that appeals to a wide range of audiences.

What I am most proud of is my ability to create music that not only entertains but also serves as a platform for social change. I am committed to using my voice and platform to amplify marginalized voices, promote inclusivity, and advocate for positive societal transformation.

To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my work is a labor of love and a reflection of my passion for both music and social justice. Through my music, I strive to uplift and inspire, encouraging listeners to embrace their individuality and celebrate the diversity that makes our world so vibrant.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?

To best support artists and a thriving creative ecosystem, society can:

Provide accessible arts education.
Allocate funding and grants.
Create affordable, inclusive art spaces.
Embrace diversity and inclusion.
Promote arts appreciation and participation.
Strengthen copyright and intellectual property laws.
Foster collaboration with other industries.
Shift cultural perceptions about the value of art.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.

As a creative, there may be aspects of my journey that non-creatives might struggle to fully grasp. One thing that might be difficult to understand is the depth of passion and emotional investment that goes into creating art. It’s not simply about producing something visually or audibly appealing; it’s about pouring one’s heart and soul into every brushstroke, every lyric, or every note.

The creative process can be an intense and vulnerable experience. It involves diving deep into one’s emotions, exploring personal experiences, and translating them into a tangible form that others can connect with. Non-creatives may find it challenging to comprehend the rollercoaster of emotions that come with the creative journey, from self-doubt and criticism to moments of pure inspiration and self-expression.

Another aspect that might be difficult to understand is the constant pursuit of originality and innovation. As a creative, I strive to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and bring something fresh and unique to the table. This process involves experimenting, taking risks, and embracing the unknown. Non-creatives might struggle to comprehend the relentless drive to create something new and authentic, to push past comfort zones, and to constantly evolve as an artist.

Moreover, the non-linear nature of the creative journey can be perplexing to those who don’t experience it firsthand. The path to creative success is rarely straightforward or predictable. It’s filled with ups and downs, setbacks and breakthroughs, and moments of uncertainty. Non-creatives may find it challenging to understand the resilience, determination, and perseverance required to navigate through these twists and turns.
