We recently connected with Xiiro and have shared our conversation below.
Xiiro, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Honestly , “Mercy” ft Lilithzplug is my most meaningful project because it was the first song I made that switched the direction of the path I was taking in music . I started out making R&B because as a black woman that’s what is considered the norm but I felt more like myself when I started to pursue a more alternative sound .
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well , I’m Xiiro , pronounced like Zero . I grew up in Compton at a small school and in a small church . I used to sing with my grandma when I was little and sang in choir until I graduated high school . My friend Diva encouraged me to make my first song because she heard I could sing and she helped me put it together . I made R&B from 2015 – 2022 . I felt like I was forcing myself to be something I wasn’t so I decided to start making a different sound .
I honestly don’t know what sets me apart . Most people in the genre I make use their music as an escape and they’re genuine in their songs and that’s what I do .
I am really proud of the fact that I didn’t care about being famous enough to do something that wasn’t me and forging and imagine that had nothing to do with who I am …
I hope to grab the attention of the people that feel how I did and sometimes still do to let them know there is a way out and that the feelings are only temporary ..
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As I stated before , I want to reach my audience to let them know that they can overcome whatever challenges they may be facing . I’ve suffered with borderline personality disorder and depression for a VERY long time but I always find ways to cope and I want my music to act as an escape when people are dealing with those hard and intense emotions .
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had more knowledge on agents and managers . I needed to know that it’s okay to say no to things I wasn’t comfortable no matter how serious .
