Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Xiaotong Wen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Xiaotong, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I am honored to be an visual designer for the groundbreaking project ‘The Art of Life: Mawangdui Han Tombs,’ a collaborative effort between Harvard FAS CAMLab, Hunan Museum, the Digital Library of China, and Chengdu Cultural Equity Exchange. This large-scale multimedia exhibition aims to merge virtual digital art with physical space design, creating an immersive experience that allows audiences to explore the rich cultural narratives of the Mawangdui Han Tombs and the early Chinese concepts of life and space-time.
In my role, I am responsible for creatively interpreting the cultural relics through visuals, emphasizing the interaction of texture and light. My work involves combining realistic textures with virtual images to represent the Han Dynasty’s understanding of life and the universe. I utilize dynamic simulation elements such as particles and volumes to create a unique visual language that bridges the gap between the ancient and the modern.
The exhibition employs advanced multimedia technologies, including 3D projection, mixed reality, generative algorithm art, real-time motion capture interaction, and spatial surround sound. It features six sequential spaces designed for a dramatic and cohesive narrative experience. In addition to the physical exhibition, the project includes an international academic research platform, an online exhibition, an XR experience theater for the Mawangdui Han Tombs, and a publication marking the 50th anniversary of the tomb’s excavation. This project aims to create a Mawangdui ‘metaverse’ that allows global audiences to participate in this significant cultural event.
As an art visual designer, I am proud to contribute to this innovative project that not only showcases the historical and cultural significance of the Mawangdui Han Tombs but also pushes the boundaries of how we experience and interpret art in the digital age.
