We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Xiaomeng Zhang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Xiaomeng, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
High-quality products require more time and more experience. At the same time, I also referred to a large number of design styles and absorbed the styles of many artists. Only by integrating more styles can I understand what I really want to express in the design. For example, after I lost my style guide, I kept referring to games, comics, and movies, and then I found a definite style. Only a stable style can ensure high-quality output. If you have problems while you are growing up, you might as well change your mentality and environment, let go of your thinking, and you will eventually get what you are looking for.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m from Hebei, China, and then came to San Francisco to study illustration. I have always been passionate about photography and traveling. I think all my concepts and painting ideas come from nature and film. After coming to San Francisco, I was exposed to a lot of avant-garde art. In the past few years, I have also realized that exposure to different fields will bring great changes to my art. Since then, I have continued to change my style, from traditional art to digital art, from technical art to fusion art. I’m still learning, and maybe one day I’ll find everything that belongs to me in my art.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There have been many struggles and no one has ever truly had it smooth sailing. My art continues to be influenced by my identity and the constant frustrations surrounding me, such as identity anxiety and questions about my own style arising from constant contact with other artists. What happens after these struggles is what really matters.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I like creations about horror and science fiction. I like watching movies by John Carpenter, Christopher Nolan and David Cronenberg, such as In the Mouth of Madness, interstalla and naked lunch. These directors and movies bring me Great inspiration and awareness of something deeper in art, which is thought. I also enjoy reading William Gibson books like Neuromancer and Minority Report .
