We were lucky to catch up with Xavier Rush recently and have shared our conversation below.
Xavier, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
From a young age, my parents crafted an upbringing that balanced firm guidance with a deep emphasis on education. Their deliberate approach also encompassed a diverse exposure to life’s facets, including sports, music, instruments, education, and the intricacies of advanced mathematics. This multifaceted introduction was further enriched by the presence of my grandparents, who played a pivotal role in nurturing a competitive spirit within me—an unyielding drive to excel in every endeavor I undertook.
This foundation has manifested as an unquenchable thirst to outdo myself in every sphere I touch. Whether it’s academics, creative pursuits, or personal growth, my aspiration has consistently been to achieve nothing short of excellence.
In the backdrop of this journey stands the unwavering pillar of my family’s support. Their commitment to my development has been an unwavering constant. Regardless of the chosen path, their backing has remained steadfast and unswerving. It’s heartening to note that this unbreakable support, driven by their desire to see me strive for my best, continues to be a driving force in my life, an unending wellspring of encouragement and strength that propels me forward, even to this very day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a multifaceted individual with a passion for transforming lives and fostering holistic well-being. Originally from Jackson, MS, my journey has been marked by diverse experiences that have shaped my path. A graduate with a Neuroscience degree from Tulane University, I also have a background as a former NFL and CFL wide receiver, having played for the Saints, Eagles, Blue Bombers, Roughriders, and even in the AAF with the Memphis Express.
Beyond my athletic pursuits, I’ve ventured into the realm of entrepreneurship and community empowerment. As the owner of XRELITE Gym in New Orleans, LA, I’ve created a space that transcends mere physical fitness. My business, XRELITE LLC, symbolizes a commitment to healing and enhancement on multiple levels. Partnering with Crescent Building Services and directing the non-profit “Reconstruction Under Structural Health (R.U.S.H),” I’ve woven a tapestry that includes fitness, nutrition, financial education, youth inspiration, and mental health support.
With nearly a decade of experience, I take pride in guiding individuals of all ages to their optimum frequency. Through personalized workouts, meal guides, healthy snacks, clothing, and immersive experiences, I empower my clients to embrace their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. What sets my approach apart is the sense of community that flourishes within my programs. Strangers become family, united by shared goals and unwavering support.
As a coach, mentor, event planner, and serial entrepreneur, I find fulfillment in being a positive vessel for those around me. Every smile on the faces of my clients and colleagues reinforces my commitment to change lives and create opportunities. With XRELITE, I’ve cultivated more than a fitness brand; it’s a symbol of transformation and growth in every aspect of life.
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
Yes, I have acquired a business named Grit Fit, which I subsequently plugged XRELITE into . This experience taught me several valuable lessons. Firstly, I realized the importance of meticulous planning and documenting all aspects of the acquisition. I learned not to rely solely on verbal assurances and to thoroughly research the business before making a purchase. Taking ample time during the acquisition process is crucial, and I now understand the significance of asking detailed questions and getting a clear picture of the business’s financials and operations.
I admit that during my initial acquisition, I was driven by youthful eagerness and felt pressured to act quickly to seize the opportunity. However, I discovered that this haste led to challenges during the transition and day-to-day operations. If I were to do it again, I would prioritize gathering more information, carefully considering the financials, and identifying areas to reduce costs before finalizing the acquisition. In hindsight, I’ve come to appreciate that a well-researched and thoughtful approach is key to a successful business acquisition.”
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
“My journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the profound impact of authentic connections. In 2016, I faced a setback when I was cut from the Eagles, which led me back to Jackson, MS. It was during this challenging time that a close friend, Brandon Lebeau, extended a lifeline. He invited me to join him in launching a moving company in New Orleans, which is now known as MOVN. With promises of initial clients and a chance to start training, I made the decision to embark on this new endeavor.
Upon arriving in New Orleans, circumstances led me to a pivotal crossroad. While staying with my best friend, Kia, who graciously offered her home for free, I found myself in a situation where I realized I needed to move out to ensure she wouldn’t risk losing her job. It was during this period that I made the difficult choice to live in my car for six months, a chapter of my life that few knew about. Despite the challenges, I tapped into my natural ability to connect with individuals, forging meaningful relationships that would prove invaluable in the coming months.
Through these connections, I managed to maneuver through life with minimal funds, all while maintaining a positive spirit and a sense of gratitude. Even during this period, I continued to socialize and enjoy life’s pleasures, thanks to the generosity of those around me who were drawn to my genuine character. These experiences reinforced the importance of treating everyone with respect, kindness, and authenticity, regardless of their status or circumstances. My network proved to be a lifeline that sustained me during my time of need.
Amid the uncertainty, a turning point arrived when the New Orleans Saints offered me a tryout opportunity. The dedication and perseverance I had shown throughout my journey paid off, as I seized the chance and earned a spot on the team. In the span of a few weeks, my fortunes transformed. The opportunity allowed me to secure an apartment, purchase workout equipment, and even invest in 50 t-shirts—a small symbol of newfound stability and hope.
This chapter of my life aligns with a personal philosophy rooted in the verse Luke 13:30, a guiding principle that underscores the significance of treating others as you wish to be treated. My journey from facing adversity to reclaiming success underscores the importance of resilience, the value of authentic connections, and the indomitable strength of the human spirit. It is a story that I carry with me, a testament to the potential within each of us to rise, connect, and thrive.”
