We recently connected with Xavier Riley and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Xavier thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
The modern DJ has built up the facade of being mystique and cool. So much so that there’s a disconnect from the people. I mean some people like a superstar personality, and that cool. I want to connect with the people so much that I leave a legacy of love. Loving people where they are through the music. When you experience a DJ Xavier set you should leave with good memories of being the star of the show. Because the people we get to entertain are the real stars.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember. I got my start as a drummer in local churches. I excelled in that arena and from there began my career as a studio and tour drummer. Having an ear for rhythm, all genres inspired my need to collect music to listen too. Fast forwarding, that collecting proved to be valuable once I started djing.
Djing began when my wife and I started to plan our wedding. We met with a few people and one of those people happened to be the owner of a DJ service. Through conversation, he asked if I DJed before and if I haven’t I should. I told him no. I don’t know where to start! He told me what to buy so I did and the rest is history. That’s been 10 years. I have the awesome privilege of providing the sound track to people love story via their wedding.
My goals have always been to provide the absolute best service I can. I wanted to provide an atmosphere conducive to fun and different. Djing weddings can become a line dance a thon, so I keep it fresh and inspiring so clients forget the pressure of the day and let loose.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Very short answer. COVID. I invested 30k into new gear for it to sit for a year and a half. But I have my faith in God to thank for that because there was no other option other than to wait it out. Which we did and I’m so glad we didn’t quit.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The customer isn’t always right. But if you’re patient enough you can make a difference….
I use to believe the customer was always right. But that’s not always the truth. Sometimes the customer needs your guidance as a professional, to get them to their right. In my field people assume that the music they listen to in the car or at the office is great for their party, and that not the case sometimes. As a DJ it’s my job to take those request and place them where both the client and crowd are happy
