We were lucky to catch up with Xavier Choice recently and have shared our conversation below.
Xavier, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Th first time I knew I wanted to pursue this professionally is really when I realized the talent I had. I couldn’t say it was a definitive moment in time. I’ve always written poetry as a kid and wrote thoughts out, so I was already very friendly with putting words and thoughts together. I was never the most popular kid, so my thoughts and words were all I had at times. After listening to different lyrical artists, such as Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, J. Cole, Common, etc. it really stuck with me. I put it all together and started getting lots of praise from many people and I had the realization that I’m really good at this. Since then, I’ve always wanted to pursue this passion.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started writing at age 10, but before that I would always hear my big brother rap over Tupac tapes back in the day. That’s where I first got exposed to hip-hop really. I fell in love with the way the words were put together and the overall craft. It drew me in instantly. I began writing poetry and my thoughts on paper. Not necessarily rapping, but after hearing different artists and talking to some of my peers, I decided to give it a shot and see if I could do it. Slowly, I started get better and better, as I was practicing my craft and putting in my 10,000 hours. Being bullied all through school helped me have a mindset of being overlooked and taken advantage of. It gave me a chip on my shoulder that I turned into fuel to the fire and used it to power my words and thoughts. I talk about a wide range of topics, but at the core of my music is still the same kid that was bullied in school and still feels I have a point to prove.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At this point in my life, I am a husband and a father to two beautiful daughters. I have a focus on my job as a warehouse worker and have plans to move up in that industry. At the same time, I know I have something special inside me when it comes to my music and it would be amazing to be able to provide financial freedom for me and my family through my music. My wife and kids are all a part of what I do.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect to me about doing this, is when people tell me how much they appreciate what I do and wanting to learn from me. I love teaching and giving advice on performances and musical techniques. I also love learning about and from other artists. I feel I’m never perfect and I can always learn and add to my craft.
